♻️ Our researcher José García-Quevedo, along with our PhD alumnus Kinga Barbara Tchorzewska, Pablo del Río and Ester Martínez-Ros writes about environmental policies in Nada es Gratis. 🔹First carrots, then sticks. Did you know the sequence of environmental policies affects the adoption of green technologies? Our study shows that starting with financial incentives (carrots) and following up with taxes (sticks) delivers better results. 🔹Eco-innovations, essential for sustainability, face barriers like high upfront costs and uncertain returns. Supporting businesses with subsidies or tax breaks first helps them overcome these obstacles and adopt cleaner technologies. 🔹What if we reverse the order? Applying taxes first is ineffective: many companies, especially SMEs, are unprepared to make the necessary investments without initial support. The result? Less eco-innovation and inefficient policies. 🔹The key? 👉 Tax incentives, such as deductions, work better than subsidies. Pairing them with environmental taxes is more efficient than using them alone. This simplifies the adoption of green technologies while reducing costs. 🔹The lesson is global: well-designed policies can accelerate the green transition. Let’s rethink how we support businesses to lead the shift toward a sustainable economy. 🔗 Read the whole article here: https://lnkd.in/dzKe_wZc 📑 The full working paper can be downloaded at: https://lnkd.in/d5PwKgcM

🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 I’m thrilled to share that our paper, "Natural Disasters and Financial Technology Adoption", has just been accepted for publication in Economics Letters! 🎉 In this study, we explore how natural disasters influence the adoption of PIX, Brazil's instant payment system. Our findings emphasize how economic downturns can accelerate financial technology adoption, showcasing the potential of fintech to enhance resilience in vulnerable communities. A big thanks to my amazing co-authors Fernando Barros Jr,Valdemar Pinho Neto, and Victor Rangel for this collaborative effort, as well as all the reviewers and colleagues who provided invaluable feedback along the way. #EconomicsLetters #Fintech #PIX Universitat de Barcelona School of Economics

Did you know that the electricity sector is one of the biggest sources of global CO₂ emissions—but also holds the key to a cleaner electricity transition? ⚡️ In my latest research, I explored how four major climate and energy policies impacted CO₂ emissions from electricity generation in 109 countries over 30 years. In a nutshell, simply piling up policies without careful planning doesn't always cut emissions. However, when countries combine carbon pricing (making it costlier to emit CO₂) with renewable energy initiatives (like supporting wind and solar power), there's real promise in reducing emissions! Global cooperation is challenging because everyone benefits from reduced emissions, even if they don't pitch in—making mitigation action a "public good." That's why it's crucial for countries to adopt their own tailored policies to their specific circumstances while working together under the Paris Agreement's principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities." Curious about how these dynamic policy interactions can power a greener electricity transition? 🌱🔋👉 Check out my full publication in Energy Policy to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eVR2m9cK
