🌾 🚜 A high-level government delegation conducted a field visit to a wheat cluster in Bale Zone, Oromia Region, to witness the remarkable results of our cluster-based farming approach. According to Dr. Mandefro Nigussie, Director-General of the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Institute (ATI), the visit highlighted the significant progress being made in transforming Ethiopia's agriculture. With a whopping 11 million hectares now cultivated under the cluster system nationwide, the Bale Zone stands out as a prime example of its success, achieving yields of up to 60 quintals per hectare. The ATI's commitment to promoting cluster-based farming is revolutionizing agricultural practices and improving the lives of smallholder farmers across the country.  🍅#Commodity_of_the_Month_Tomato 🍅 🍅🧑🌾👨🌾 This month, our priority commodity spotlight shines on #tomatoes. It is among the 11 priority commodities of the Agricultural Commercialization Program (ACC), the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Institute (ATI)’s flagship program. It is one of the most produced & consumed vegetables in Ethiopia & important cash crop for smallholder farmers. It requires warm, clear dry conditions & altitudes ranging between 700 - 2000 masl. The optimum temperature for seed germination ranges between 18 & 24°c & the maximum 30°c & minimum 8-10°c. Based on its growth habits, it can be classified into three major groups, which are recognized by the arrangement of the leaves & the inflorescence on the stem as indeterminate, determinate, & semi determinate.   🍅Tomato is a vital vegetable crop for enhancing food security in the daily dietary consumption and contributing to the economy. The ATI is actively working on tomato production, productivity, and commercialization in selected ACC regions: Oromia, Amhara, former SNNP & Tigray, recognizing its significant role in achieving food self-sufficiency & economic growth. We have prioritized this commodity as it is prominent for its nutritional benefits, richness in vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, essential amino acids, monounsaturated fatty acids & carotenoids among others that perform various body functions. The ATI has implemented several strategic interventions to enhance the production, productivity, & commercialization of this commodity in the above targeted ACC regions. These include organizing smallholder farmers in Farmer Production Clusters (FPCs), where farmers are grouped together with adjacent farm plots. These clustered farmers  share knowledge & experiences among themselves, purchase agricultural inputs, and market their produce in groups. The FPCs also facilitate capacity building training for farmers, agricultural experts, & development agents. The Institute has constructed aggregation centres & roadside markets, equipped with post-harvest handling and transportation facilities such as cold trucks. It has also developed operational manuals & standards that ensure quality production at the grassroots level. Additionally, the ATI has facilitated crucial market linkages with local processors and traders complemented by product expos aimed at stimulating production & fostering processing capabilities.    🍅Tomato Smallholder Farmers (SHFs) supported by the ATI are undergoing transformative changes in their livelihoods while contributing significantly to the commercialization of the commodity. In the 2016 Ethiopian Fiscal Year 25,289 tomato smallholder farmers have been organized under 339 FPCs & produced over 2.9M quintals of tomato by cultivating 4.9kha of land. Of this produce, 2.3M quintals were sold as marketable surplus with a value of 5.8B ETB showcasing the growing impact of the commodity on the SHFs' livelihoods & the country’s economy.

 🌾 Empowering Youth in Agriculture 🚜 The Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Institute (ATI), in partnership with Mastercard Foundation, successfully delivered skill-based capacity development training for the Agricultural-focused Dignified Employment for Youth in Ethiopia (ADEY) program staff and Implementing Partners. Conducted two rounds (Nov 18–29, 2024), bringing  together 87 participants from the ATI and six implementing partners. Topics included: 🧠Mindset & social behavior change 💼Youth-focused agri-entrepreneurship 🛣️Pathways to youth employment in agriculture 🌠 Operational excellence, safeguarding, and gender Field visits to 🐤 poultry farming and 🪱vermicomposting enterprises were organized in collaboration with the Oromia Agricultural Transformation Centre. Participants gained essential skills and insights to enhance program implementation and drive meaningful impact. By prioritizing capacity development and learning exchanges, the ADEY program is empowering and enhancing capabilities of its staff to create sustainable solutions to the challenges of youth unemployment, drive inclusive 📈 economic growth, and contribute to a brighter future for Ethiopia's agriculture sector. #Agriculture #DignifiedEmployment #Capacitybuilding #ADEY
