As rural-urban migration continues to rise in Ethiopia, the streets of Addis Ababa have become a challenging reality for many young people searching for a better life. Among them was Michael, a 17-year-old who left his hometown of Wolayta, hoping for a brighter future, only to face the uncertainty of life in the city. But in his darkest moment, when survival seemed impossible and hope was fading, the SOS Children’s Villages Reaching Out to Children on the Streets Project became his lifeline, offering not just safety but the support needed to rebuild his life. Learn how SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia is dedicated to creating more opportunities for young migrants and children who are forced to live on the streets due to various circumstances by clicking the link below. https://lnkd.in/dxmujUwv #RuralUrbanMigration #ChildreninStreetSituation #SOSChildrensVillages #Ethiopia

No child should grow up alone
About us
We are an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. We started our humanitarian work in Ethiopia with the opening of our first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. Since then, we have expanded our programs to different regions where there are significant needs for intervention and where we believe we can work in partnership with all relevant actors to bring sustainable positive outcomes for children’s and young people. Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and those that are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community based organizations across seven program locations; we aspire that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

Awareness begins within. Our team gathers to reflect on the powerful messages of the Gender Based Violence awareness posters, marking the launch of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. This year's theme, 'UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls', reminds us that creating change starts with us. Together, we are committed to fostering a safe, respectful environment, not only at work but also in our communities. #16DaysOfActivism #FreeWoman #EndGenderBasedViolence #NoExcuses #SOSChildrensVillages #Ethiopia #AddisAbaba

Growing up without the love, care, and stability of family bonds leaves children vulnerable to physical, mental, and social challenges. The ripple effects of this separation can perpetuate cycles of vulnerability and family breakdown, leaving generations at risk. Governments must prioritize scaling up investments in programs that address the root causes of family separation. These initiatives are not just compassionate—they’re cost-effective, offering better returns by creating environments to safe, secure, and thriving futures for children who need it most. In a world where millions of children are unnecessarily separated from their families, we cannot overlook the opportunity to make a difference. By addressing systemic challenges—poverty, social inequality, violence and inadequate support systems—we can build stronger families and stronger societies. On the World Children’s Day, I invite you to read my latest op-ed, read the full article here https://lnkd.in/dDgPgt7w and I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments. Let’s talk to inspire meaningful change. #ChildWelfare #FamilyStrengthening #Socialprotection #Childrights

According to the Humanitarian Needs Overview, the number of people in need has increased from 6.7 million in 2023 to 7.2 million in 2024. Ongoing crises have forced many women and girls into dangerous coping mechanisms, like sex for survival and child marriage, heightening their vulnerability to sexual exploitation and abuse. Since the 2020 regulation on Prevention and Protection from Sexual Harassment, Exploitation, and Abuse, SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia has been leading efforts to address this crisis. Through our outreach programmes, we have reached numerous people, raising awareness and promoting GBV prevention, especially against sexual exploitation and abuse. Our work spans in all our seven programme locations, partnering with local representatives and volunteers to create lasting change. As we move into 2025, our goal is to expand our reach, not only in emergency response but also in family-strengthening initiatives to protect and empower even more communities, working to prevent sexual exploitation and abuse before it occurs. #PSHEA #EndGBV #EmpowerCommunities #StopExploitation #soschildrensvillages #Ethiopia

It is important to recognize the difference between myths and facts in child and youth safeguarding. Misunderstanding these distinctions can prevent us from fully protecting children and young people from all forms of harm. Let’s stay informed and vigilant in ensuring their safety. #ChildAndYouthSafeguarding #SOSCVE #StayInFormed #AddisAbaba #MythvsFact
