In✈️ Leg 8. VTBD-WMKC ✅ ✈️Leg 9. WMKC- WIHH✅ Wow, finally in the road again, these first flight was from Bangkok to Kota Bharu, Malaysia. After a scenic departure over the Chao Phraya and BKK downtown. The last 30 minutes of the flight, decending to the destination the aircraft got a proper wash trough a tropical rain. 🌧️ Refueling was quickly done, unfortunately the security check (350$) for Halim (Jakarta City Airport) not as fast, so next in the menue was: WAITING! Walking 🚶♀️ around the AC, meeting the local airport cow 🐄, airport cat 🐈, and airport rooster 🐓. Then, relaxing. 😎 Inside the aircraft, underneath the aircraft, in the wing. These are the two alternating modes of a pilot: 1. highly aroused, focused, sharp, intense 2. Waiting, waiting, waiting (almost boredom) The art is to change from one to the other on call. Like when you receive the WhatsApp message that your landing permit has been granted after 3 hours waiting in 32 C in the sun, with 80% humidity, swear pearling down your back… The second flight went 3 hours into night flight, with the historic moment of crossing the Equator slightly south of Singapore 🇸🇬. My record breaking long flight to Australia as single pilot came to a sudden halt. It will continue. Not before I let you in on the behind the scenes excitements. They highlight of the trip so far, drumm-roll…. ✈️ LEG 7. VEBS- VYYY(planned)- VTBD actual) ✅ When a team of professionals work together unbelievable things can happen and that what seemed unlikely and impossible becomes POSSIBLE! After take off from Bhubaneshwar, India, on a humid and hot morning, like most mornings in this region, I noticed some differences with my right engine. As I reached my cruising level I decided that it would be the safest to fly to the nearest service center of the aircraft to ensure a safe continued journey. Now, inflight diversions are no joke , we train them to flight students from nearly day one, but to do that over the Bay of Bengal and try to get a permit to land in Bangkok would seem impossible. Unless… unless one has inflight satellite communication, text messaging and most advanced avionics (#g1000 NXI phase 2) Competent dispatch collegues communicating with the local service center in Thailand (@Asia Aerospace Services) who would contact his best people to call the Yangon tower and the Myanmar Civil Aviation. You see, while this was happening on the ground, I was monitoring the engine, calculating fuel consumption, circumnavigating thunderstorm clouds, loosing GPS, dead reconkng. Any aviator will know, any of these parameters will make you sweat, let alone the combination. At the end of this 6 hr 30 min journey Bangkok tower prioritized me, after I flew with minimum clean speed for a while to wait until the thunderstorm over the runway would move away. ✈️ Leg. 5. OOSH-VAAH (Suhar, Oman- Ahmedabad, India (pronounced Amdabad))✅ ✈️Leg 6. VAAH-VEBS (Amdabad- Bhubaneswar ( never knew about this city before either)) ✅ This day was the day of superlatives: Flying at FL190, longest leg yet, most challenging WX, most difficult ground stay, poorest hotel. I have not eaten out of precaution as the hotel I found did not radiate confidence in having a clean kitchen. So, little to no food for 24 hrs, only a 4 hour sleep and what would turn out to be problems with right engine. (more about that on leg 7) The hotel had no toilet paper and the shower was over the toilet. Everything was dirty and I slept in my clothes, after I took a cold shower. 🚿 no temperature regulation possible. Hungry, sweaty, sticky, agitated——> let’s leave VEBS! Next adventures please, and a clean shower! (Little did I know that I would end up in Thailand!) Did you know that while the number of female commercial pilots is increasing, from 2016 to 2021 it only increased by 0.5%? Nowadays, every airline and flight school is advertising with women on their homepages/posters, which, while motivating, at the same time is misleading. I often get asked, especially after the revival of the industry after COVID, how we could attract more women into the cockpit, to counteract the global pilot shortage, I find myself thinking of the improvements and right ways it would need, to get the results. Please share you ideas and inputs, I would like to learn what others think?
