The Job creation and skills development sub-programme in #Uganda has successfully been completed by Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa together with its partners Renewables Academy (RENAC), INENSUS GmbH, Sendea Academy, USEA. The first newly constructed mini-grids funded by the Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa are delivering electricity in northern rural Liberia. The mini-grids, developed and operated by Energicity, have the potential to provide up to 8,000 Liberians with access to electricity. Construction of the company’s first sites in Liberia, and the first completely new mini-grid sites commissioned in Sub-Saharan Africa with BGFA support, began in 2023. The two completed sites each have a total capacity of 26.88 kWp. This week marked the official inauguration of the BGFA-funded solar mini-grids in the communities of Totoquelleh and Farwhenta in Gbarpolu, northern Liberia. “Commissioning our first two mini-grids in Liberia in partnership with BGFA and the Liberian government marks a significant milestone in our mission to bring clean, reliable and affordable energy to off-grid communities. The BGFA project demonstrates the power of innovative financing, technology and community-led development in bridging the energy gap and contributing to reducing energy poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa has renewed its theory of change, which outlines a framework and strategic approach to drive sustainable development of the off-grid energy market in Sub-Saharan African countries during the programme implementation from 2020 to 2028. 🎉Important milestone reached for Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa. The 30th project agreement has been signed with a mini-grid developer in #Uganda! Access to electricity will improve living conditions, support economic development and help accelerate the green transition in the country. This new BGFA agreement has been signed with NOA Uganda to develop new mini-grids on Bunjako Island. In total, up to EUR 2.3 million in results-based financing will be provided by BGFA to the company. NOA Uganda aims to install 3,300 energy service subscriptions by constructing and deploying eight containerised solar mini-grids. New funding opportunity introduced by Norway ⬇️ 📣 Norway announces a call for applications for funding of NOK 1.75 billion for the provision of guarantees. The aim of this call for proposals is to attract applications for guarantees that fit the criteria and objectives of the scheme and to catalyse further investments in renewable energy in low- and middle-income countries. This is the first time where institutions and companies can now apply for Norwegian state guarantees for investments in renewable energy in developing countries. The call is open ended, but consideration of proposals may be put on hold once the total volume has been committed. 📅 On 25 November 12 CET, Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation will host an information meeting for potential applicants. We arranged last week at UN Climate Change Conference COP29 Azerbaijan a side event on ‘Scaling up clean off-grid energy access’ at the Nordic pavilion on #Energy day 15 November. The event discussed the challenges of affordability to scale-up access to clean off-grid energy and reach the most rural areas, development of skills and how to engage more women in the sector, as well as the importance of technical assistance. Early results from an ongoing study by 60 Decibels of the BGFA financed portfolio companies and its customers indicates that nearly half of the people reached so far are living below the poverty line and that a large part of these people have not had access to electricity before.
