"Noooo, yet another software I need to learn" 🫠 We get it—everyone’s tired of juggling endless systems. Employees, farmers, suppliers… the whole crew. But sometimes, system integrations can make life easier. Sure, it sounds like a hassle at first, but once it's set up, it really simplifies things. Take tracking environmental footprints, for example. With API integrations, you can: ✨ Skip manual data entry into multiple systems. ✨ Reduce errors and keep data consistent everywhere. ✨ Deliver transparency and traceability that impresses both customers and regulators. Here’s how it works: Suppliers enter data into their usual portal. An engine like Biocode does the calculations, and voilà—results are ready. No extra effort for the user, just smart, automated insights. 💚 HKFoods integrated Biocode’s engine into their producer portal, and now they get real-time insights to reduce emissions and boost sustainability. 💚 MTech’s Minun Maatilani Wisu helps farmers track soil carbon changes during crop planning—giving them a clearer view of how to optimize practices. Ready to simplify your environmental footprint calculations and drive sustainability effortlessly? • How should you calculate emissions? Spend-Based or Activity-Based? Understanding your company’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is essential for effective climate action. Two common approaches are spend-based and activity-based calculations, but when should you use each? 🛒 Spend-Based Spend-based calculations estimate emissions based on your purchasing data. It’s a quick and easy method because it uses average emissions data from various industries. But it’s not very precise—it doesn’t capture details unique to specific suppliers or products. This method is ideal for an initial overview of your emissions or high-level reporting. ⚙️ Activity-Based Activity-based calculations dig deeper into your specific operations. By measuring actual data—such as fuel usage, raw material quantities, or waste—you get a much clearer and more accurate view of your emissions. While this approach needs more data collection, it’s great for detailed and precise tracking that can inform meaningful change. 📝 Choosing the Right Approach For many companies, a hybrid approach works best: start with spend-based calculations to get a rough overview, then use activity-based data where possible to improve accuracy. This blend helps you follow standards like the GHG Protocol and build a solid plan for reducing emissions.

  • Finding emission factors for carbon accounting can be a real pain in the a**. 💩 We’ve seen teams spend days hunting through: 📚 Environmental databases 📊 Energy statistics and reports 🧑🔬 Scientific journals 📈 Industry-specific publications …just to find the right emission factors. Yikes! 😬 That's why we've built an emission factor database inside Biocode. It’s extensive, flexible, and built right into our platform to make choosing the right factors so much easier. With Biocode’s database, you can: ✅ Choose from over 2,000 emission factors ✅ Use your own modelled factors or those from your suppliers ✅ Be confident in up-to-date, transparent data No more hunting, we say – just quick, reliable emission factors for your calculations. ✨ Read more, and try it out here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dkPvUc3F

  • October's edition is here! This time, Foodprint in Focus covers: ✅ How to set science-based emission reduction targets with Biocode, aligned with SBTi’s FLAG guidance. ✅ How agricultural emissions compare to transportation in product carbon footprints, and why this matters in the context of locally produced vs. imported food. ✅ What ESRS E1 is and its benefits for companies. • True or false: Choosing locally produced food is more climate-friendly than imported food? This is tricky, but the answer is: 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘦. 👀 Why? While local food can reduce transportation-related emissions (often referred to as "food miles"), transportation typically contributes less than 10% of a food product’s total carbon footprint. Other factors, such as: ✔️ raw materials ✔️ energy use ✔️ fertilizer use ✔️ and land use emissions can have a much larger impact on overall emissions than the distance the food has traveled. For instance, importing food that is grown more efficiently in terms of resources like water or energy may have a lower overall carbon footprint than locally produced food. Thus, it depends on the specific food, production practices, and transportation methods involved.

I finally wrote a fully-fledged case study of the Biocode project I’ve been working on. Have a look: https://lnkd.in/dPzSWRgs I shipped it a year after the initial release, and it’s still not perfect — nor does it need to be. If you're building your own portfolio, I recommend not overdoing the first version so you can ship it faster. You can always iterate and add more content later when you have time.
