Enjoying the diverse health innovation ecosystem in the capital region. This week we had a chance to partake in a Business Finland and CleverHealth Network organised Co-Innovation workshop. At the workshop we started to plan joint collaboration projects between hospitals, research organisations and companies working with Data/AI, Robotics and Sustainability. The other highlight was the Terkko Health Hub community event that reminded us that a thriving innovation ecosystem needs openness, enabling facilitators, active students, engaged researchers, bold startups and leading corporate players. Here is to collaboration! 👏 We aim to boost this type of collaboration in our new project: Health innovations across silos, that is coordinated together with University of Helsinki, Aalto University, Biodesign Finland and SPARK Finland. What an inspiring visit to Lumoral by Koite Health , the very first project and company that came from Biodesign Finland ✨ Our alumni Sakari Nikinmaa gave us a master class on how to take a new healthtech product to the market! 1. You need to do great science while addressing a clinical need to convince the professionals. Then they can help you to communicate your product's value to end customers and the wider public. 2. You need to invest in great design and vision early on so you can get the right people and investors on board. 3. You need to sell and market to your idea in the right channels and with the right opinion leaders, while experimenting on what works in each market. Thanks to the Lumoral team for your insights and the office tour!

🎉 Our Biodesign program alumna Hanna Castrén-Niemi led INGA team at Aalto University, has been awarded a €3,2M grant from the Biden-Harris Administration's Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) Sprint for Women’s Health. The grant will support her groundbreaking project, Home-Based Safe & Intelligent Labor Inductions, aimed at revolutionizing labor induction. ✨ Remarkably, the project was the only one in Europe and one of just two outside the United States to receive this funding. 🤝 Huge congratulations to Hanna and the INGA team, and all who contributed towards the success! Heidi Kruit, MD, PhD., Leena Rahkonen, MD, Doc. Aki Laakso, Lauri Parkkonen "Our incredible team aims to address the critical challenges of labor induction, especially for women in rural areas who face limited access to obstetric care. We believe that high-quality birth healthcare should be accessible to every woman globally. With the unwavering support of our partners in Finland, we’ve been able to make significant progress in our research. Now, with additional ARPA-H funding from the U.S., our team will continue to build a better future for prenatal health for all women—regardless of their shape, size, or color."

Tilaisuuden aikana kuulimme inspiroivia puheenvuoroja hankkeen teemoista: Timi Lahti (Jalkapallon Pelaajayhdistys - Football Players' Association of Finland) jakoi pelaajien aivoterveyteen liittyviä tarpeita kentältä.

Thank you Ella Mikkola for giving us an illuminating view to International IP & IP Contracts at EY. Including insightful discussion on patents and other forms of protection with our Biodesign Fellows. Our take home message was that good preparation, well timed communication and professional support are key factors in succesfull negotiations, contracts and defence of IP rights. This knowledge also comes handy in creating new IP and business opportunities. The other takeaway was to to understand that you need multidiclipinary knowledge when you face a new obstacle in the complex legal landscape.
