📌 NEW REPORT: Urgent scale-up of carbon removal and utilization technologies needed! The report, "Carbon Removal and Utilization in the Nordic Countries," highlights the urgent need to scale up carbon removal (CDR) and utilization (CCU) technologies. The global demand for carbon removals is immense – on par with the current thermal coal market, requiring 7–9 gigatonnes of removals annually to achieve climate neutrality. 🇫🇮 🇸🇪 🇩🇰 🇳🇴 🇮🇸 The Nordic countries are already paving the way with innovative carbon removal (CDR) and utilization (CCU) projects and pioneering policies. With clear advantages, such as relatively large amount of biogenic CO2, affordable zero-emission electricity generation, and favourable CO2 storage conditions, the Nordics have the potential to lead globally – but we need action now. The policy environment as a whole remains insufficient, and industry actors are calling for more work to be done, both nationally and on the EU level. What needs to happen? ✔️ Create ambitious, separate targets for removals and emissions reductions ✔️ Prepare clear national strategies for carbon removals and utilisation ✔️ Secure demand and provide early-stage support for removals ✔️ Support CCU technologies alongside CDR to secure the synthetic fuel and material market ✔️ Strengthen Nordic cooperation to support cross-border value chains ✔️ Ensure business cases for different solutions when EU-level compliance markets are introduced ✔️ Support the recognition of biogenic CO2 and mixed-source projects at the EU level Nordic governments play a key role in enabling this transformation, ensuring the right policies, incentives, and frameworks are in place to support innovation and scale. Nordic businesses are ready to lead – let’s make it happen. This report is part of the Climate Neutral Nordics project funded by The Nordic Council of Ministers and The Nordic Council and carried out in cooperation with Hagainitiativet & Skift - Næringslivets klimaledere. #climateleadershipcoalition #carbonremovals #CDR #NordicLeadership #climatechange

💲 Carbon Pricing in the Spotlight at COP29 💲 No One Should Be Able to Pollute Without Cost At the Climate Leadership Coalition, we have been committed to advancing carbon pricing for the past decade. For leading companies, it remains the single most important tool to support global climate mitigation efforts and drive the green transition. Carbon pricing also helps create a predictable investment environment and establishes a global level playing field that businesses can trust. Yesterday marked a significant milestone as WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, President of Finland Alexander Stubb, Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault, ICC Secretary General John Denton, and leading carbon pricing experts gathered at COP29 in Baku at the invitation of the Climate Leadership Coalition. The discussion underscored a critical sense of urgency and the opportunity to strengthen international carbon pricing frameworks. Notably, one of the first decisions at COP29 established new operational standards for Article 6, setting the stage for a voluntary global carbon market under the Paris Agreement. Concurrently, the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is already shaping carbon pricing policies on a global scale. For these developments to progress, close collaboration and leadership from international economic organizations are essential. Earlier this year, these organizations published a collaborative report on carbon pricing, which was prominently discussed during the event. (Upload in comments) The governments of Canada and Germany, alongside the President of Finland, called for continued multinational cooperation and the development of guidelines to align local mechanisms. Without such efforts, carbon pricing will not sufficiently cover global emissions, carbon prices will remain too low to drive effective mitigation, and investments in climate solutions will fall short of what is necessary. So successes in place, but more to be done #together. A warm thank you to everyone who contributed to yesterday’s event, including including Aik Hoe Lim, Daniel Ramos and Ralph Ossa from WTO, Sophie Talarico and Raelene Martin from ICC, Ruud de Mooij and the team from IMF, Jo Tyndall and the team from OECD, Stephane Hallegatte and the team from World Bank, and Berthold Goeke and the team from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Germany.

Puhtaus luo kasvua koko Euroopalle. EU tarvitsee vaikuttavaa politiikka säilyttääkseen globaalin kilpailukykynsä ja saavuttaakseen ilmastotavoitteensa. Tässä meidän ehdotuksemme: 1. Kunnianhimoiset päästötavoitteet ja yksinkertaisempi sääntely 2. Puhtaiden teollisuudenalojen kilpailukyvyn vahvistaminen 3. Hiilen hinnoittelun laajentaminen 4. Hiilenpoistoratkaisuiden skaalaaminen Tutustu CLC-verkoston politiikkasuosituksiin joilla EU-komissio vie Euroopan tulevaisuutta eteenpäin: https://shorturl.at/FFyO0
