In these turbulent times, the EU must reaffirm its role as a peace project, focusing on the essential work of mediation, dialogue, and conflict resolution. It is clear that security and defense alone are insufficient. The EU must invest in peacemaking - this is a smart, long-term investment that will pay for itself and benefit us all. These were the key messages at the Martti Ahtisaari Legacy Seminar, held in the European Parliament in Brussels on Monday. The seminar was part of CMI’s event series, which stimulates discussions about the future of peacemaking, building on the living legacy of President Ahtisaari. Conversations about peace are urgently needed in a situation where the space for it has narrowed. The event aimed to bring the peace agenda to the forefront of the newly elected European Parliament and the newly appointed College of Commissioners. It gathered MEPs, peacemakers, and diplomats to reflect on President Ahtisaari’s legacy and the EU’s future as a peace project. Ahtisaari frequently emphasized that the EU’s most important task is to build peace. The speakers agreed that the EU can and should play a larger role in this mission, but the work for peace requires greater commitment and funding. They highlighted the EU's ability to bring conflicting parties together and facilitate dialogue. For example, the European Parliament plays a crucial role in promoting peace through inter-parliamentary dialogues. EU enlargement was also discussed as a significant opportunity for peace, though it must be handled carefully. The seminar was co-organized with the European Parliament, Ireland, and Finland. Currently at Tampere Peace Day, the Finnish peacemaking ecosystem and invited experts engage in thought-provoking discussions on the future of peace. This year’s theme, "(Re)Searching Peace," challenges participants to critically rethink peace and explore how peace research and practice can adapt to the pluralities of peace. We are bridging the gap between research and practice while exploring emerging agencies and practices in an era marked by increasing contestation and global crises. Tampere Peace Day is organized by the Tampere Peace Research Institute (TAPRI), CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, Finn Church Aid (FCA), and The Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission (FELM).
