Fazer Mills an international oat supplier and a leading player in the Nordics' industrial milling markets, producing high-quality grain products and innovative oat-based solutions. Our production is based in Lahti, Finland and Lidköping, Sweden. Our wide oat product range covers several oat flakes, flours, groats and brans to use in different end-products, from non-dairy applications to breakfast cereals and other plant-based food solutions. With significant capacity in two countries, we ensure operational flexibility. Our oat products are exported to scores of countries – always with 100% Nordic quality.   • 🌾 Thank you to all Fi Europe visitors! Fazer Mills thanks everyone who visited our booth at Food Ingredients Europe in Frankfurt last week. Once again, Fi Europe brought together a diverse group of food industry professionals to discuss the latest trends, innovations, and future food solutions. It was fantastic to see great interest in oats and innovative solutions for various new plant-based products. 🔸One of the application highlights in our booth was an oat-based choco spread which delighted visitors with its deliciousness. Markku Mikola Ph.D., Head of R&D states that our O 2000 FP (Fine Oat Powder) and OEF (Oat Endosperm Flour) are excellent ingredients for creating such applications. 🔸We also offered sample dishes from Oat Rice – a tasty, nutritious, and versatile food grain that’s a perfect alternative to conventional rice.   • 🎉 Introducing Mikko Heino, the supervisor at our oat mill! Mikko is responsible for the production and packaging of oat products and supervises oat millers and bagging line operators. Additionally, he actively develops the oat milling process from a production perspective, ensuring everything runs efficiently and with high quality. 📚 Mikko's journey to his current role started with studies in marketing and logistics at a university of applied sciences. When he saw that Fazer Mill was recruiting, he eagerly applied for production roles - and to his great delight, he was selected. Mikko gained diverse experience and soon became an oat miller. After five years, Mikko transitioned to the supervisor role in spring 2022, following an organizational change. 🗨️ According to Mikko, the best part of the job is the people and continuous development: "Colleagues, changing situations, and the opportunity to develop operations keep the daily work meaningful. The most challenging part of the job is reacting to market situations and implementing changes, but it also brings interest and opportunities to learn new things,” Mikko says. 🏃♂️ In his free time, Mikko enjoys outdoor activities, spending time with his family, and his children's hobbies.   • 🌾 Crop 2024 – High-Quality Grain Despite Challenging Weather 🌾 💙 This year’s harvest in Finland started early and faced challenging weather, but overall the results were strong. We have enough milling quality grain to meet our needs. Oats: Good yields with good kernel size and light color. Wheat: High-quality winter and spring wheat, though some spring wheat batches need extra testing for mycotoxins. All products are safe for consumers thanks to comprehensive analysis. Rye: A smaller yield, but solid quality overall. Some ergot contamination was found, but thorough testing ensures safety. 💛 Smaller but Consistent Harvest in Sweden In Sweden, the 2024 harvest began with low stock levels, making a good yield crucial. Despite crop forecasts were lowered, both winter and spring wheat, along with rye, maintained high quality. Some oats had lighter test weights, but the light color remained consistent. Although the harvest was smaller than expected, grain quality stayed high. 👉Thanks to the hard work of our farmers, we have plenty of high-quality grain to continue supplying our mills! #FazerMills #Crop2024 #Oat #Wheat #Rye #HighQualityGrain

  • In Finland Fazer Mills' grain purchase is largely based on direct contract farming and direct purchase from Finnish farmers. Cooperation with farmers plays a central role here, which Fazer has implemented for five decades. Our common goal is to ensure that clean and high-quality Finnish grain will be available in the future as well. We are in daily contact with our contract farmers and keep them updated, for example, through newsletters. Annually, we organize two training seminars together with our co-operation partners and give presentations at various farmer events, as well as arranging field events with our partners. These trainings focus on promoting sustainable farming methods. In our Grain Vision work, we have had four pilot farms in co-operation. These pilot farms play an important role in contract farming cooperation, as their experiences are shared with other contract farms. "An important part of our Grain Vision farmer collaboration is sustainable farming audits, which we have conducted since 2014," says Grain Purchasing Director Tero Hirvi. In total we have implemented almost 200 different farm audits.   • 🌍 International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste    Did you know that September marks the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste? This year, the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste falls on Sunday, September 29, 2024. The day serves as a global reminder of the importance of preventing and reducing food waste. Reducing food waste is beneficial from both an environmental and economic perspective. It is one of the most effective ways to diminish the environmental impact of food. Lowering food loss positively impacts the climate, water systems, land use, and biodiversity. The production of food also requires significant resources including soil, water, energy, and labor. When food is wasted, the valuable resources invested in its production are lost. At Fazer Mills, we are committed to reducing food waste. As highlighted in our sustainability series earlier this year, we optimize resources and follow circular economy principles to make the most of our resources e.g. by using every part of oats and minimizing waste. Additionally, we enhance accuracy in forecasting, refine our product range, and actively involve our team. Together towards a more sustainable future 💙 We are actively working to reduce wastage across the entire Fazer level. One of our sustainability goals is to reduce avoidable food waste by 50 percent by 2030. In 2023, we have successfully reduced food waste by 5% from the 2020 level, but this is just the beginning. We continue to develop innovative solutions and encourage our customers and partners to do their part in reducing waste.
