Yesterday marked a pivotal moment in my journey toward Oulu2026 - European Capital of Culture 2026 where my commissioned sonic spatial artwork, The Logos, will be premiered. This groundbreaking piece will feature the world’s first-ever sonified fast radio bursts (FRBs)—up to 8-billion-year-old radio signals from the other side of our galaxy—juxtaposing the enigma of these cosmic phenomena with the divine mystery of the Logos. The performances will take place in the venerable Oulu Cathedral, a space whose history and acoustics are central to the experience. I’m thrilled to share that I’ve already conducted the room impulse response (RIR) measurements for the space, working with the brilliant Genelec engineer Markku Syrjäpalo. My heartfelt thanks to Siamäk Naghian, Genelec’s visionary CEO, for supporting the development of this project, and to the incredible Oulu 2026 team for their collaboration in making this happen. This work wouldn’t be possible without the guidance of ecologist and philosopher Timothy Morton, whose exploration of interconnectedness and hyperobjects provides the conceptual bedrock for the piece. The technical partnership with Prof. Kiyoshi Masui, FRB expert at MIT Synoptic Radio Lab and the CHIME telescope in Canada, has enabled the sonification of these ancient signals. The Logos will transform Oulu Cathedral into a sanctuary of cosmic and spiritual wonder, resonating with the sounds of the universe and human imagination. As we prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime performance, I’m reminded of the power of collaboration across disciplines and the unique beauty of merging science, art, and philosophy, especially in these uncertain times. Oulu 2026 will be a milestone in exploring the mysteries of existence. Thank you to everyone helping bring this vision to life. Stay tuned—there’s so much more to come.

We prepared for our 12,000-person Nokia Arena show with Vesterinen Yhtyeineen at a much smaller and acoustically dryer arena, leveraging cutting-edge technology. During rehearsals, the band used in-ear monitors while our sound engineer listened at the far end of the hall through a small stereo PA system emulating Nokia Arena’s speaker setup. To enhance the experience, I built an acoustic simulator around the mixing position with eight Genelec speakers, recreating Nokia Arena’s acoustics in real time. The arena’s sound system and acoustics were previously “sampled” using a microphone array to capture spatial impulse responses, which I then rendered into multichannel convolution reverbs for each playback channel using the Spatial Decomposition Method developed at Aalto University. I was amazed by the realistic result—achieved with just eight speakers! The setup could have worked with as few as five speakers while still delivering a powerful and convincing effect. This process allowed our sound engineer to practice in an environment as close as possible to the actual show, fine-tuning every detail to perfection. It was incredible to use technology in such a creative and practical way. Huge thanks to Genelec for providing the speakers that made this possible!
