Hiven Leads the Change in 🇸🇪 Sweden’s Tightened Flexibility Requirements - First Ever Approved FCR-D Static Application with Electric Vehicle Chargers  ⚡➕⛽➕🚗 🟰 🥇✅ Hiven, an innovative internal venture of Fortum, is revolutionizing flexibility as a service for retailers, electric vehicle (EV) and charger OEMs. Since 2021, Hiven has been on a mission to deliver cutting-edge solutions, culminating in their first commercial test in July 2024.     Now, in February 2025, Hiven’s application has been approved, allowing them to operate and generate revenue from the FCR-D (Frequency Containment Reserve for Disturbances) flexibility product. A big thank you for this groundbreaking achievement goes to the team in Zurich (Michaja Bösch, Ioannis Dimanidis, Mohamed BEN BELGACEM, Marek P.) whose dedication was crucial for the breakthrough. As of February 2025, Hiven proudly stands as the first aTechnical Aggregator in Sweden to achieve FCR-D compliance with the new regulations, utilizing off-the-shelf chargers and passenger EVs without the need for additional hardware, dongles, or local-control instruments.  Navigating the Rigorous Prequalification Process  In the autumn of 2023, Svenska kraftnät (Svk), the transmission system operator, revised and tightened the rules for participating in flexibility markets. To deliver flexibility, a stringent prequalification test must be conducted and assessed by Svk.  Hiven has mastered several challenges during this process, making it more than just a technical feat: 1. The role of the independent Balancing Service Provider was postponed, delaying Hiven’s operations and introducing additional legal hurdles.  2. Central steering of electric vehicles required adherence to enhanced cybersecurity standards, unlike other flexibility sources such as hydropower.  3. Svenska kraftnät was initially skeptical about EVs meeting the new requirements, necessitating extra efforts to explain the technical setup and transparently communicate Hiven’s breakthroughs in central steering of chargers.  With this official approval ☑️ serving as a quality verification, Hiven is thrilled to leverage Fortum’s expansive Nordic home market and to bring even more flexibility to the market and a strong effort to capitalize it.
