Its a great pleasure to see the newly introduced elements of our new ATCO initial training in action now. It took some time to develop and introduce it, but thanks to a very committed team of great people, it was possible to set up a training program which aligns better with the needs of the current generation of students. The gamification element is a key element to make our training more attractive, digestible and successful! Every dropout is unacceptable! When an ATC Student’s training is terminated, it is the Training Organisation that has failed. And they fail a lot! There are training units that only are able to pass less than 40% of the students they train! The Training Organisation has the task to train the students to meet the competency requirements of the ATC profession. They get a small handful of students who are carefully selected to be sure that they have the required capabilities and abilities for the job, so training these tested individuals should be a tick in a box, right? So how can the training go so wrong? It is because the training methods used in ATC Training are old fashioned, classroom and teacher driven, and simply are extremely unexciting to the students of today. The modern students are Tik-Tok people. There is no use trying to sit them for a full working day in a classroom listening to talking heads and watching power point presentations. They want things to happen fast, and they want flexibility. They want interesting things to do, they want to enjoy what they do. Lektor Aero’s training mind set is locked on student success. What can we do to connect with the learner and how to motivate them to learn Air Traffic Control. We use game-based training to catch and keep the attention of the students. Interesting, quick, challenging and engaging games hook the learner to binge study. Active and happy student learns better. And when the student is successful, then the academy is successful, which benefits the ANSP who eventually employs the ATCOs.
