Exploring Educational Inequalities in Europe: Preliminary Findings from Our Scoping Review Educational inequalities remain a critical challenge—impacting not only individual life outcomes but the well-being of societies at large. As part of the first work package in the #MapIE project, we are conducting a scoping review of longitudinal studies across Europe to understand the specific pathways by which educational gaps develop.     Preliminary Insights: Age-Group Coverage: While middle school students feature prominently in these studies, early childhood education remains comparatively understudied. Interventions & Systemic Factors: There is a shortage of research on interventions and systemic factors that perpetuate these inequalities. Socioeconomic Focus: Socioeconomic status is the most frequently examined inequality category, whereas geographical and intersectional inequalities are often overlooked. Socio-Emotional Competencies: Despite their importance, the relationship between socio-emotional skills and inequality remains an underexplored topic.     These findings point to the need for more diverse data collection, particularly in underrepresented regions and age groups, as well as causal research designs that can illuminate how specific policies and programs might reduce educational disparities. Looking ahead, the results from this review can help practitioners, researchers and policymakers pinpoint where evidence is lacking and what strategies might be most effective.     This project is the result of an academic collaboration between researchers at the University of Oslo, the University of Gothenburg, Tampere University, and the University of Szeged. The Centre for Educational Measurement at the University of Oslo (CEMO) coordinates the project. Diego G. Meet #MapIE - Team Norway! 🇳🇴  From the land of trolls and fjords, the Norwegian team brings expertise in educational measurement, policy-making, research synthesis, and international large-scale assessments, all from the renowned Centre for Educational Measurement (CEMO) at the University of Oslo.     About CEMO:  CEMO is a research centre advancing educational measurement through research, collaboration, and innovation. By balancing quality, equity, and effectiveness, the centre develops tools that align with Nordic societal and cultural values and addresses the full cycle of educational measurement.     Meet the Team:  Prof. Rolf Vegar Olsen  As CEMO’s director and a full professor of educational assessment and measurement, Rolf leads research on international large-scale assessments and the validity of assessment instruments. He is also a key advisor to Nordic policymakers. Prof. Ronny Scherer A full professor at CEMO and co-director of CREATE, Ronny focuses on research synthesis methods, international large-scale assessments, and educational equality. Dr. Diego G. Campos A researcher at CEMO, Diego develops and applies advanced methods—such as IPD meta-analysis and machine learning—to integrate large-scale data into systematic reviews, with a focus on educational inequalities.     The team is coordinated by Prof. Rolf Vegar Olsen and Prof. Ronny Scherer, who represent the senior resources responsible for the initial coordination and management of the project. Dr. Diego G. Campos devotes all his time to MapIE activities and is expected to gradually grow into the role of PI of the Norwegian project team. Meet #MapIE - team Finland!    The time has come for you to meet #MapIEProject consortium partners!  We will start from Finland – the land of a thousand lakes and the coordinating partner in the project.  The Finnish team includes top experts in educational assessment and research from two universities and one national agency. So, here we go!    Research Centre for Education, Assessment, and Learning (Tampere University), and Centre for Educational Assessment (University of Helsinki) The Research Centre for Education, Assessment, and Learning (REAL) conducts large-scale educational assessment studies, with a particular focus on learning to learn and transversal competencies. The centre aims to contribute to scientific knowledge in the different areas of educational evaluation and to train top-notch experts in the field. #REAL collaborates closely with the Centre for Educational Assessment (#CEA) at University of Helsinki, both in the #MapIE project and in many other educational assessment studies.     In the MapIE project, REAL and CEA are represented by the project leader, Prof. Mari-Pauliina Vainikainen, senior research fellow Meri Lintuvuori, doctoral researchers Laura Nyman and Kateryna Zabolotna, postdoctoral researcher Antti Koskinen, programmer Mikko Asikainen and project specialist Salla Kotakorva.    Finnish Education Evaluation Center (Kansallinen koulutuksen arviointikeskus (Karvi) / NCU / FINEEC)    #FINEEC is an independent governmental authority operating as a separate unit of the Opetushallitus - Utbildningsstyrelsen - Finnish National Agency for Education. FINEEC acts as an expert organization in the evaluation of education and early childhood education and care (ECEC). FINEEC produces evaluation-based information to support decision-making in education policy as well as the development of education and ECEC. Among its responsibilities, FINEEC conducts national large-scale assessments of pupils’ learning outcomes.    In the #MapIEProject, FINEEC is represented by counselor of evaluation and researcher, Jukka Marjanen. Before joining FINEEC, Jukka worked at the University of Helsinki, where he was involved in implementing many large-scale assessments in CEA. 

In memorium, Monica Rosén A founding member of the MapIE project, Monica Rosén, Professor of Education at the Department of Education and Special Education at the University of Gothenburg, suddenly passed away in August 2024. She was deeply involved in research in educational science and had a wide national and international network of researchers who she had collaborated with. Monica was the driving force behind several doctoral schools and research projects, and she was especially involved with the development of doctoral students and junior researchers. Her work for research was of great importance and she left a great void behind her. Our thoughts are with her husband and two sons. 🥀
