Warm wishes for the holiday season! 🎄 As the year comes to an end, we want to express our heartfelt thanks to all our customers, partners, and everyone we’ve had the pleasure to meet and work with this year. We are proud to continue our tradition of giving back by supporting the Good Holiday Spirit collection – an initiative that brings joy to low-income families in Finland during the holidays. It’s a small gesture, but we hope it makes a big difference. Wishing you all a warm, peaceful, and joyful holiday season! 💫 Team Medbase #HyväJoulumieli #SeasonsGreetings #GivingBack #ThankYou

  • 💡 Tetracycline antibiotics may be used for up to three weeks also when breast-feeding   Use of systemic tetracycline antibiotics during breastfeeding has long been of concern due to risk of dental staining of the breastfed infant associated with long-term use, such as for treatment of maternal acne. These drugs are excreted into breast milk in relatively low amounts, and, e.g. for doxycycline, it has been shown that simultaneous ingestion of milk reduces the absorption by up to 50% (1). It appears from literature searches that substantial new information has not been published lately, but the apparent lack of reported adverse effects has led to gradual prolongation of the recommended maximal length of use from one week (2) to the current practice of 3 weeks, as also used by the Helsinki University Hospital Teratology Information Service. Thus, as a precaution, long term (over 3 weeks) or repeated courses of tetracycline antibiotics seem best to be avoided when breastfeeding, as even low exposure levels over prolonged period of time may lead to adverse effects. 👉 See references here https://lnkd.in/d87NBXh5 👉 Explore our databases Gravbase and Lactbase for comprehensive insights into drug safety and efficacy during pregnancy and lactation https://lnkd.in/d2ctT69u #ScienceToPractice #Tetracycline #Lactation #InformedDecisions #EvidenceBasedMedication #Medbase

  • 💡 At least one actionable pharmacogenetic mutation is present in 97-99% of population (1,2). More than half had three or more mutations (2). Drugs that are affected by these variants had been prescribed to 31-37% of these patients (1,2), two prescriptions to 25% of patients, and three prescriptions to 12% of patients during follow-up (2). Many commonly used drugs are pharmacogenetically sensitive. Ten most frequently prescribed drugs were simvastatin, tramadol, ondansetron, codeine, citalopram, clopidogrel, allopurinol, warfarin, amitriptyline and paroxetine (2). A substantial number of patients are exposed to drugs for which they carry potentially problematic variants leading to adverse effects or inefficacy of the drug. 👉  See references here https://lnkd.in/dbwpcp2p 👉  Explore our dedicated pharmacogenetic database, Pgxbase, for more information on the impact of genetic variants on drug safety and efficacy https://lnkd.in/dXzpDtbA #ScienceToPractice #Pharmacogenetics #InformedDecisions #EvidenceBasedMedication #Medbase

  • 💡 Herbal products containing ashwagandha and turmeric/curcumin linked to liver injury   Herb-induced liver injury (HILI) is a notable cause of acute liver dysfunction, with herbal products and supplements responsible for 16-20% of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) cases (1-4). Recent studies have linked ashwagandha and curcumin (from turmeric) to liver injury. Twenty-two cases of severe liver damage have been associated with ashwagandha, and at least 48 cases with curcumin, especially when combined with piperine to enhance absorption. Symptoms include jaundice, nausea, and elevated bilirubin levels, and while liver function generally returns to normal after discontinuing use, three deaths have been reported. (5,6,7,8,9,10,11)   Healthcare professionals should be aware of these risks and inquire about patients' use of herbal supplements.   Read the full article with references here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dhffShS3 #ScienceToPractice #Medbase #Ashwagandha #Curcumin #InformedDecisions #EvidenceBasedMedicine
