AI-RAN has significant business potential for the mobile industry. We are only at the beginning of augmenting RAN capabilities with AI and harnessing the synergies of AI and RAN, and it’s important that we steer this transformative development together. At #MWC25, our roving reporter spoke with Dr. Jinsung Choi, Chair of the AI-RAN Alliance and Nokia’s Ari Kynaslahti, a board member of the AI-RAN Alliance. The AI-RAN Alliance was established just one year ago, bringing together mobile operators, technology suppliers, the wider partner ecosystem and academia. In mobile networks, we are used to measuring performance based on data throughput. As the adoption of generative AI, agentic AI and robot AI becomes ever more widespread, token throughput, or how efficiently an AI system can process and generate tokens becomes an essential metric. An equally important new metric defines the cost of generating one million tokens.
