Upcycling Mixed Textile Waste into Clean Materials for the Next Use Cycle

About us

The ambition of PESCO-UP is to transform the textile recycling industry by creating new raw materials from mixed wastes. It addresses the circularity across the textile recycling value chain, and reduces the industry dependency on virgin materials. As the objective is to ensure the full circularity of the outcomes and encourage collaboration between industry stakeholders, technologies tested during the PESCO-UP project cover all the textile recycling processes throughout the value chain. PESCO-UP is a Horizon Europe project, funded by the European Union. It started on 1 January 2024 and will last for 48 months. It receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the grant agreement No. 101138367.

  • Polycotton, a mix of polyester and cotton, poses a significant recycling challenge due to the difficulty in separating the fibres for reuse, especially back into textile fibres. We, at PESCO-UP, wanted to tackle this issue♻ PESCO-UP partner Nordic Bioproducts Group Ltd’s technology facilitates the separation of cellulose and synthetic materials from mixed polycotton textile waste and modifies the cellulose for use as a valuable raw material in the production of new textiles. PESCO-UP is scaling up this technology, marking a significant step towards widespread implementation 🚀 Currently, as part of the PESCO-UP project, Nordic Bioproducts Group successfully produced new regenerated cellulose textile fibres from 100% polycotton waste-derived cellulose. While the development is still at the lab scale, the results are promising. Learn more ⬇ https://lnkd.in/e_DdKhRY

  • At the recent Munich Fabric Start, Traci Kinden, director at TEXroad shared valuable insights on the importance of textile data in scaling up recycling efforts and reducing carbon footprints. As part of the PESCO-UP consortium, TEXroad plays a pivotal role in advancing circularity within the textile industry by ensuring that data becomes a common language for both the public and private sectors🔗 To increase recycled fibre use, accurate data on quantities, locations, and fibre compositions is essential, with PESCO-UP supporting traceability and certification to build confidence in recycled materials and ensure their broader adoption.

  • #DidYouKnow that PESCO-UP is addressing the pressing challenge of recycling mixed textile waste by developing sustainable and innovative solutions for polyester and cotton fibres? Data are essential in this effort, particularly in developing hyper-spectral imaging technologies that support textile sorting and recycling processes. Accurate sorting data is key to characterising recycling feedstocks and ensuring they meet recyclers' input specifications ♻️ The PESCO-UP project is aiming to transform fibre recycling with innovative strategies. A first step was to define minimum data requirements for the recycling value chain. TEXroad, VTT, Reverse Resources, and other project partners contributed to this effort, focusing on imaging and data technologies to improve efficiency and transparency in the circular value chain 🔗 Read more about their work ⬇ https://lnkd.in/d6_R8bGq
