“All of Latin America is on fire at the moment. We’re losing thousands of hectares of ecosystems…” This is how Coral brings us to Brazil at the start of our conversation. She is currently working for re.green, an organisation that restores tropical forests at scale, and she recently published her book on Ecosystemic Design. Reflecting on the Service Design Global Conference 2024 💫   Reviewing my year, I realized I hadn’t yet shared my thoughts on the Service Design Global Conference 2024, which I had the pleasure of attending virtually this year. So here we go!   Here are some highlights from the talks and workshops that inspired me the most:   💻 Workshop Transition Design: Cultivating Our Collective Agency for Just and Sustainable Futures Facilitated by Zeynep Falay von Flittner and Iines Reinikainen. In this workshop we looked at frameworks for systems thinking, sustainability and futures. The introduction of the Collective imagination practice community where co-creative imagination is used to find realistic optimism really strung a chord withing me in terms of how I see imagination and constructive dialogue shaping our future.   💡 Keynote: Designing a Better Urban Future: Learnings from Helsinki Speaker: Hanna Harris In my favorite talk Chief Design Officer Hanna Harris explored how Helsinki has embedded design into urban development. She showcased the strategic role design plays in sustainable city-building, from connecting stakeholders across levels to facilitating flat hierarchies. I was highly impressed to see how design can mediate urban conflicts, creating a bridge between policymakers and operational teams.   💥 If You Can’t Tame It, Embrace It: Complexity Science for Service Designers Speaker: Jen Briselli Jennifer Briselli introduced the concept of complexity science, which I find highly relevant for many of the systems we are used to design in. Her point about embracing uncertainty rather than trying to control or predict outcomes felt incredibly relevant, especially in complex projects. 🤜 Prepare to Disagree: Unlock the Power of Conflict in Design Speaker: Alan Colville I highly value the role of conflict in any constructive endeavor, and I loved how Alan reframed disagreement as a catalyst for creativity and collaboration and shared useful practical tools for engaging in constructive conflict.   🫶 A heartfelt thank you to the Service Design Network, the organizers and speakers as well as Unic for enabling this enriching experience for me. It was highly inspiring and a reminder of the transformative power of service design in addressing today’s complex challenges. #servicedesign #servicedesignglobalconference
