  • Snower and SNOWPACK modeling ❄️ SNOWPACK simulations are only as good as the input data that is used in the simulation. Snower functions as a compact Automatic Weather Station (AWS) that collects data also in remote places, delivering precise measurements of: 🔹 Relative Humidity 🔹 Snow Height 🔹 Ambient Temperature 🔹 Snow Surface Temperature To improve accuracy, Snower integrates additional meteorological and environmental parameters—such as wind speed and radiation—from the nearest external sources.   Benefits of SNOWPACK modeling with Snower sensors: ❄️ Using data from multiple AWS locations significantly enhances SNOWPACK modeling by providing: ❄️ Higher Spatial Resolution – More measurement points reduce uncertainties and capture local variations in snowfall, temperature, and snowmelt patterns. ❄️ Reliable readings and customizable time intervals By leveraging dense AWS networks or singular installation to remote locations, Snower provides critical insights for researchers, hydrologists, and climate scientists, enabling better data collection that can be utilized in SNOWPACK modeling.

  • Snower supports snowpack modeling – but what exactly is snowpack modeling? What is Snowpack? ❄️ SNOWPACK is a snow cover model developed by the Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF). It considers factors such as snow accumulation, metamorphism, settling, and temperature changes in the snowpack. The model is widely used for research, forecasting, and risk assessment in snow-related fields. ❄️ Typical users of the SNOWPACK model include: - Avalanche forecasters - Ski resort operators - Hydrologists - Climate and environmental researchers - Engineers working on infrastructure in snowy regions ❄️ Outputs of the SNOWPACK Model The Snowpack model provides various outputs that help in analyzing snow conditions. These outputs are available in different formats, including: 🔹 .PRO – A specific time-series format used for professional snow analysis 🔹 .SMET – A standard format for meteorological data storage 🔹 .CAAML – A structured XML format for avalanche-related data With the growing availability of measured data and ever-improving modeling accuracy, it's important to remember that SNOWPACK is still just a model. However, its long history of development (Bavay et al., 2024) and continuous improvements make it a valuable tool for many applications. SNOWPACK remains a powerful resource for researchers, industry professionals, and decision-makers alike. • We are taking part in På Väg next month and are excited to meet people there. Harri Valasma and Lauri Nieminen are going to be there both days representing us! Send either of them a message and plan a meeting to talk more 😊 Have you checked out our road video yet?

  • Now it's time to introduce the final member of the team, Marketing lead, Saana Valasma~ What do you like most about working at Snower? I like that I can wear many different hats daily. I can do everything from creating illustrations and videos to building our workflow and managing daily administrative tasks. What are you looking forward to this year with Snower?   New releases, (possible new look? 👀 ) and definitely our workshop in the Spring! What are your favourite winter activities? I love snowboarding :D #winteractivities #snower #teamintroduction

  • Next up is time to introduce our Customer Support and Operations Specialist and tolppa expert, Vilma Sydanlammi ! 😄 What do you like most about working at Snower? The work is flexible, and every day brings new learning opportunities. The time spent sitting at a computer is nicely balanced by outdoor installations and other tasks. We also have a great and inspiring team, so there’s rarely a dull moment. What are you looking forward to this year with Snower? As this is my first winter working here, I’m looking forward to handling everyday tasks, such as staying in touch with new and existing customers and seeing how our clients benefit from the data we collect. What are your favorite winter activities? I love running all year round. In winter, I also spend a lot of time skiing both on and off the slopes. The best part of skitouring is definitely the uphill climbs! After a day of skiing, I love curling up on the couch and knitting a wool sweater. Have a snowy weekend guys! #snow #offpiste #skiing #snower #team #workteam

  • Next few weeks we are posting about our amazing team! First up is Lauri Nieminen who works as a Chief Scientist at Snower! ❄️😄 What do you like most about working at Snower? - Snow is a very complex element—it's fun and games, but it also poses dangers and challenges. It's interesting working with something that affects our lives on so many levels. There is a lot of potential for different types of applications for snow measurement. Additionally, the balance between laptop work and fieldwork makes it even more engaging. What are you looking forward to this year with Snower? - I'm excited about our live meetups with the Snower team and diving into the fieldwork period now that the winter has properly started. I am also hoping to see data from multiple locations in different snow climates so that we can further develop our product. What are your favorite winter activities? - I enjoy all kinds of adventures in the snow and ice! Freeskiing in the mountains, Nordic ice skating on sea ice, and ski touring in the Scandinavian fjells resonate deeply with me. I also like quick laps in the snowpark and the snappy turns of telemark skiing on my local ski hill.

  • Happy Friday! We recently released new features for our customers, and here are the highlights: Introduction to black ice detection: - Snower sends an alarm when there is a higher risk of black ice on the road surface. It works in melt-freeze and hoar-frost situations for angled devices. Freezing rain events are not included. Improvements to the notification system: You can now get email notifications from the rule builder. You can create set conditions for your devices in the rule builder. The rule engine supports these values: - Snow depth, temperature, relative humidity, and surface temperature. - Notifications from black ice are also included. Snowfall feature: - Direct measurement devices set as “sheltered devices” calculate daily snowfall and total seasonal snowfall. All very exciting stuff! 😄
