With UN Convention to Combat Desertification #COP16 starting today in #Riyadh we are proud to share this project we're working on helping to bring hope by restoring lands and pushing back the desert! Watch Andrew Millison's first of four videos on the Great Green Wall, the enormous #restoration project stretching across the #Sahel region of #Africa to push back the desert, harvest rainwater, increasing food security and regenerate ecosystems. It showcases everything great about nature-based solutions, serving as a climate mitigation project removing gigatonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere as well as a peacebuilding project. Here we zoom in on Niger, where the amazing transformation can already be seen. 🌱 Landscape Scale Restoration: Locally led adaptable techniques from grasslands to trees, that are already restoring community lands right across the continent. 💧🛰️Ancient Techniques, Amplified by Technology: "half moon bunds" are a technique indigenous to the Sahel, capturing scarce water and restoring lands, while remote sensing scales planning, demonstrates impact, and enables learning and adaptation. 🌍 Climate Change adaptation and Biodiversity Uplift: High Quality Carbon Dioxide Removal from the atmosphere that cools the local area and increases habitat creating a net gain for biodiversity. 🌾 Food security: Directly increasing feed for pastoralist communities while improving water resources for communities and farmers far beyond the project area, increasing yields, health and nutrition and decreasing dependence on food aid. 🤝 Environmental Peacebuilding: Empowering communities and increasing resilience while reducing the stressors that have led to conflict in the region. We are proud to work with Andrew Millison to provide communications material for this series and with the World Food Programme to measure report and verify the impacts of their work at local and landscape level, learn and improve, and unlock both development assistance and carbon financing for their projects. If you are interested in supporting these projects reach out! We will gladly connect you projects carrying out community-based ecosystem restoration projects removing carbon in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. As part of the World Economic Forum Great Green Wall Working Group and a 1t.org innovator, we have had the privilege to advise other organisations and recommend following Tree Aid to read the report that will be launched tomorrow on carbon financing for the Great Green Wall Watch Inside Africa's Food Forest Mega-Project! below and follow Andrew's youtube channel to watch the rest of the series. https://lnkd.in/eXCkicwn Are you attending COP16? About us
At Soilwatch, we believe in empowering communities to create their own solutions in the climate emergency. Adapting to climate change, preventing desertification and enhancing food security aren’t separate paths in development, but come together in the soil. By applying remote sensing technology and machine learning, we are able to provide up to date, reliable and low cost soil carbon measurements and develop verified carbon removal projects in North and East Africa. These projects not only remove CO2 from the atmosphere, but mitigate conflict and food insecurity in the most vulnerable areas where our team has direct on the ground experience.

Water security, environmental peacebuilding, tech innovation, carbon removal, restoration and carbon markets. It all comes together in the soil and at #COP29 We were honoured to be invited to the blue zone of #COP29Baku to showcase our technology and projects with WFP in the Kurdistan Region Iraq as well as our work on mangrove restoration. By restoring 40,000 hectares of land and 20,000 hectares of mangroves with local communities through nature-based solutions and native species, not only is CO2 being removed and durably stored, but water and food security are improved throughout the region. Thank you to Antonella Ferraina Eero Wahlstedt Joona Mikkola for their intense work on these projects and to our partners for making this happen. #carbonremoval #restoration #article6 #naturebasedsolutions #water #sdgs

Thank you, CDR.fyi! Exciting updates from COP29 on international carbon markets. Achieving net-negative emissions demands a dual approach: cutting emissions and removing carbon. Nature is our greatest ally in climate change mitigation and adaptation 🌍💙 #carbonremoval #greentech #climatetech #carbonmarkets #cop29 #naturebasedsolutions
🇫🇮 Fantastic Finland: A Growing Hub for Carbon Removal With 7 companies and 6 projects, Finland is emerging as a key player in durable carbon removal—not just in the Nordic region, but across Europe. 📈 Finland’s ambitious climate plan aims for net zero by 2035, targeting the removal of 21Mt of CO₂e by then. Biochar dominates its CDR market, with Finnish suppliers selling over 28,000 tonnes by the end of Q3 2024. The country also leads in research and innovation, driving CDR advancements alongside its Nordic neighbors. 🌍 From global CDR registry Puro.earth to Carbo Culture, home to one of Europe’s largest biochar plants with a capacity of 3,000 tonnes per year, Finland is setting benchmarks for scaling global carbon removal. 🤝 Notably, Carbofex was the first supplier in CDR.fyi's database, recording a transaction of 100 tonnes of CDR with Swiss Re over five years ago. 🙌 A big shoutout to Finnish innovators like Carbonaide, Soletair Power, Nordic Impact Oy, Soilwatch, and Ekovilla Oy for their vital contributions to the CDR ecosystem. 📌 Earlier this year, we launched a new feature allowing organizations to map their CDR projects and facilities. At SoilWatch, we've been working hard to build integrated approaches and bringing in multiple stakeholders to create urgently needed impact. Great discussions through Team Finland Kenya and more to follow 💪 Stay tuned 👂
Had the pleasure yesterday to meet with the Permanent Secretary Pekka Pesonen and Senior Specialist Joel Järvinen from the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry during their visit to Nairobi to introduce our work and discuss issues related to aid and rural support in the region. Also lending their expertise were colleagues from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) - Sauli Hurri, Lucas Lindfors, and Ronald Ajengo - to talk about their country programme supporting smallholder farmers and agricultural value chains with funding from Finland. Issues with agricultural livelihoods are severe in the region with an aging farming population, dwindling yields, climate change and wider environmental degradation, and the difficulties in securing funding for primary production on which all value chains rely. These issues are not only affecting farmers in East Africa as the trends are more global, though vulnerability and impacts on communities are higher due to lower social security support systems. Integrated efforts between public and private organisations on many levels are required to address these issues to avoid chronic food and water insecurity, entrenched poverty, a collapse in rural ecosystems and the communities that rely on them, along with forced migration and conflict that would follow. Excited also to go beyond these issues and discuss concrete ways that these integrated solutions can be implemented, and what role each of our organisations can play. Through strategic investment and engagement, even a small country like Finland can lead the way in this. Thank you Matts Weurlander and Team Finland Kenya for organising! #climatechange #ruraldevelopment #foodsecurity #agriculture Soilwatch

A UN expert group comes to an agreement of key elements of an international carbon trading system. The 12-strong group includes also representatives from the EU and Saudi-Arabia who have traditionally opposed in climate policy. Citing Eve Tamme, the unilateral adoption of the framework this week by the UN body made the international carbon market "basically operational". Functioning international carbon markets can help to fund climate change mitigation and adaptation projects in poorer countries. #climatefinance #carbonpricing #cop29 #climatechange #carboncapture #climatetech #sustainabledevelopment https://lnkd.in/g9sn9AqU
