Every year at Steerprop, we are fortunate to work with students who demonstrate curiosity, a knack for solving problems, and a genuine eagerness to grow both personally and professionally. Our goal is to offer them opportunities to transform their academic knowledge into hands-on experience by tackling real-world challenges. Ilona Sjöblom, an Environmental Engineering student from the University of Oulu, returned to Steerprop as a summer trainee in 2024, with a focus on sustainability. Building on her work from last year, she advanced her carbon footprint calculations for both the organization and its products - a critical step in preparing for upcoming industry regulations. Ilona sees immense potential in the maritime sector for environmental engineers. “The industry is shifting rapidly towards carbon neutrality, creating exciting opportunities,” she shares. With her next goal set on writing a Master’s thesis in sustainability, Ilona looks forward to contributing even more to Steerprop’s efforts in environmental responsibility.
