Developing safe, sustainable and high-performance adhesives and coatings from industrial softwood bark
About us
SuperBark is an EU funded project, which develops safe and sustainable adhesives and surface coatings from softwood bark, which are major industrial side streams of the forest industry. The goal is to produce adhesives and coatings with over 95% bio-based content and replace fossil-based solutions currently used in consumer products in the furniture, construction, transport, and packaging sectors. The project includes 12 industry and research partners from eight countries. The partners will evaluate the safety, sustainability and technical performance of the adhesives and coatings for further R&D actions towards commercialization of the developed processes and products. The project is supported by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking and its members. Funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or CBE JU. Neither the European Union nor the CBE JU can be held responsible for them.

🌳 Can wood treatment and biocide products be produced from wood bark? This is what the #Interreg Greater Region project ExtraBark aims to explore 🔬 By unlocking the potential of tree bark — an undervalued by-product of the wood industry — ExtraBark seeks to extract and characterize valuable molecules for plant and wood protection products, offering a sustainable alternative to synthetic chemicals. ExtraBark brings together a consortium of 7 financial & 4 methodological partners from Belgium, Luxembourg, France, and Germany 🤝 The project has kicked off in January 2024 and will run until February 2027. We are excited to collaborate with the ExtraBark team on future activities, and achieve our shared goals in creating bio-based products from bark! 🙌 Read more about ExtraBark 🌳🌳 https://lnkd.in/dyFEwh35 #ExtraBark #EUProject #Innovation #Bioeconomy #Sustainability

We hosted an LCA Workshop together with BIORING! 🤩 In December, BIORING and SuperBark successfully held an insightful online workshop focused on LCA methodologies for bio-based product development. Over 60 researchers, industry experts, and other key stakeholders joined us to exchange knowledge and experiences, and discover insights from EU-funded projects LIGNICOAT BBI Project, THERMOFIRE CBE-JU, ZeroF project, and FRACTION EU PROJECT. Our workshop discussions highlighted ideas around four key topics: 1️⃣ Bridging Data Gaps 2️⃣ Enhancing Data Sharing & Transparency 3️⃣ Innovating LCA Modeling Approaches 4️⃣ Communicating LCA Results Effectively A huge thank you to BIORING for the collaboration, and to all the speakers and participants for their valuable contributions 👏 Looking forward to seeing you at future events! 5️⃣ We start the top 5 of the #CBEtop2024 with this story about #biobased materials advanced by our projects that attracted 8,200 views 👇 We know that #wood is a key ingredient in everyday items like construction materials, furniture, packaging, and textiles. But what happens to the bark, which makes up 10-15% of a tree trunk? 🧪 Usually, the bark is just a by-product used for energy. But what if the CBE JU-funded SuperBark project could unlock bark’s potential and turn it into a valuable source of #biobased chemicals for high-quality products? Discover how SuperBark is transforming the future of #sustainable materials: https://lnkd.in/g-y_TN9v

🎄 Season’s Greetings from SuperBark!🎄 As we celebrate the holidays surrounded by pines and Christmas trees, we are reminded how these beautiful evergreens inspired our bio-based solutions for the future. At SuperBark, we’re harnessing the potential of pine and spruce bark—a valuable sidestream from the forest industry—to develop safe, sustainable, and high-performance adhesives and coatings. Our goal? To replace harmful fossil-based substances like formaldehyde in industries such as furniture, construction, transport, and packaging with bio-based solutions containing over 95% renewable content. By testing, validating, and scaling our innovations, we’re working towards a cleaner, healthier, and more circular bioeconomy.🌲🌲 May your holiday season be full of joy for the future 🎁 #SeasonsGreetings #SuperBark #Sustainability #BioBased #Adhesives #Coatings #Bioeconomy
