As we set about delivering a clean energy transition, we must answer a key question: how can we generate reliable, low-cost renewable power, while retaining jobs and safeguarding the economy? Håkan Agnevall, President & CEO of Wärtsilä, recently spoke to Ken Silverstein at Forbes to discuss how natural gas and renewables can work together to accelerate global decarbonisation efforts. As demonstrated in our recent global power system modelling report, Crossroads to net zero, grid balancing power plants can play a key role in supporting renewable power, to deliver the energy transition at the lowest cost and emissions. 🌍 How to optimise land usage required for future net-zero energy systems? 🌱 As the global energy transition continues to gain momentum, understanding the implications of land usage for renewable energy sources is crucial. ⚠️ Our latest study reveals a critical insight: If decarbonisation would rely solely on renewables, the land needed for wind and solar energy infrastructure alone would cover an area comparable to the size of continental Europe. This would pose major challenges for land rights, permitting, and the geographic reach of transmission systems. 🔍 Fortunately, there is a solution that leads to 50% less renewable capacity and land needed: Incorporating a small amount of balancing power plants can halve the required land footprint and ensure renewable energy doesn't go to waste through overbuilding. This approach optimises land usage for sustainable growth and is essential for achieving emission reduction targets by 2050. We are happy to announce a ten-year Long-Term Optimised Maintenance Agreement between Wärtsilä and Xcel Energy, an investor-owned utility based in Minnesota, USA. 🤝 The agreement covers Xcel Energy’s two new power plants located in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The plants will run altogether on 8 Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engines, with a combined output of 77 MW. These fast-starting engines provide effective grid-balancing power, crucial for compensating fluctuations in energy supply from renewable sources. The agreement includes remote support from Wärtsilä’s Expertise Centers, as well as all spare parts for the engines and advisory services during overhauls. This partnership is a testament to our dedication to delivering high-performance, reliable solutions that empower our customer’s success. Celebrating two decades of partnership powering remote mining operations! 🚀 For over 20 years, we’ve been working alongside PT ANTAM Tbk to keep their ferronickel smelting operations in Pomalaa, Southeast Sulawesi, running reliably. So, how has this partnership evolved to meet the unique challenges of mining in remote locations? It all started in 2003, when Antam needed a dependable power solution for its Pomalaa facility. Wärtsilä stepped in to deliver a 102 MW diesel power plant equipped with six 18V46 engines under an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract. Over the years, we’ve worked together to enhance the plant’s performance: 🔧 In 2016, we upgraded it to a 137 MW multi-fuel power plant, improving efficiency, fuel flexibility, and reducing emissions. 📊 By 2017, we transitioned to a Guaranteed Asset Performance (GAP) agreement, using real-time operational data to provide tailored recommendations, ensuring maximum efficiency and reliability. Today, our collaboration ensures Antam has uninterrupted energy to achieve its production goals while optimising costs and cutting emissions.
