The Fiji Cancer Society is thrilled to have won the 2024 Task Force Award at the 79th UN General Assembly in New York! This award recognises our efforts in #cancerawareness, #advocacy, #patientsupport, and #palliativecare - especially for our most vulnerable communities. We’ve taken significant steps in improving community palliative care, funded by Women’s Fund Fiji. This program is dedicated to helping patients live their final days with dignity, focusing on comfort and quality of life, and #holisticcare. From 2021 to 2024, over 180 community health workers, zone nurses, and interns across central and Nadroga Navosa province divisions were trained in palliative care, ensuring families have the support they need in these critical moments. A big thank you to all our partners and supporters for helping us strive toward a cancer-free Fiji! The Ministry of Health and Medical Services in Fiji has partnered with the Kirby Institute at the University of New South Wales to expand access to HPV testing and treatment for women in the region. Led by Prof. Andrew Vallely, Dr. Lisa Vallely, Louise Ellis, and Josephine Gabuzzi, comprehensive training sessions were organized for clinicians, lab technicians, midwives, and collaborating Civil Society Organizations partners affiliated with the MHMS. These training sessions focused on enhancing the participants' skills in various areas, such as self-collection techniques, specimen analysis using GeneXpert machines, and the use of thermal ablation devices. The newly introduced procedures are less invasive than conventional Pap smears, provide faster results, and have high accuracy rates. It is important to note that HPV testing is considered the gold standard for detecting HPV, enabling the early identification of cervical cancer, which is the second most prevalent cancer among Fijian women. To extend screening and treatment services to a wider population, the initial participants of the screen and treat program were women in Levuka, Galoa, and the Lyndhurst factory in Suva. The Fiji Cancer Society is proud to have been part of this two-week program and would like to express their gratitude to Lyndhurst Fiji for allowing them to conduct the program at their factory, as part of their efforts to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030.
