About us
The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) was established in 1940 to administer and control native or itaukei land for the benefit of the iTaukei (indigenous) landowners. As a statutory body administering 91% of Fiji’s total landmass, we are committed to provide and maintain highest standard of land management services to our stakeholders. In providing our services we aim to: • Support potential internal and external investors on development of iTaukei land; • Issue and administer iTaukei land lease and license contracts; • Enhance new innovations and business opportunities on iTaukei land; • Support local, regional and international treaties and conventions through partnership engagement; • Provide spatial planning and mapping through ArcGIS; • Empower landowners through financial literacy, investment and business advisory as well as on Gov. projects. • Regularly consult with landowners and to provide sound advice to all stakeholders; • Ensure that sufficient iTaukei land is ”reserved” for the use, maintenance and support of its owners; • Control and manage extinct mataqali (customary land owning unit) land; • Collect and distribute premiums, rent and royalties derived from leased land.

TLTB issues a development lease for Waisasa Settlement The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) is pleased to announce the issuance of a 10-year development lease for the Waisasa Settlement in Tacirua to ensure that landowners can enjoy fair and equitable returns on the use of their land. The lease has been granted to Mr. Sikeli Nakonaivalu, a member of the landowning unit of Nawavatu, who has partnered with Optimal Management Consultant to develop the land for residential purposes. In response to recent media reports, TLTB CEO Mr. Solomoni Nata stated that while TLTB has the legal authority to evict occupants of informal settlements, there is an understanding with development lease holders to relocate or realign them as part of their responsibility, and in recognising the need for a comprehensive approach involving multiple stakeholders, including the Government through the Ministry of Housing. "One of TLTB’s primary objectives is to ensure that landowners receive a fair and equitable return from the utilization of their land and squatters to have secure title over native land. This development lease to Mr. Nakonaivalu is a step towards achieving that," said Mr. Nata. The development aims to transform this prime site into 57 residential lots, offering existing occupants the first opportunity to purchase these lots. Should they be unable to afford the lots, TLTB and the landowners will work together to identify alternative relocation sites. Although a 45-day notice has been given to the occupants starting from July 16th to vacate the land, TLTB has requested the developer to extend the notice by another six months to allow time for identifying relocation sites. A recent meeting with the developer confirmed that Phase 1 of the development plans, which includes two commercial blocks along Princes Road, can proceed. TLTB emphasizes that the predicament for squatters is that this is bound to happen where they will be relocated or realigned to facilitate formal development. Their occupation is never secure in the absence of a formal title. We wish to remind the public that TLTB has issued 40 development leases to the Ministry of Local Government since 2010, and now Ministry of Housing, to formalize squatter settlements all around Fiji. Furthermore, TLTB has issued development leases to landowners within Mataqali Nawavatu to develop with commercial partners. TLTB remains committed to facilitating development that benefits both landowners and the wider community, ensuring that all parties involved are treated with fairness and respect. #landdevelopment #iTaukeiBusiness #LOUempowerment
