A former Apple hardware engineer, who worked at the company for over a decade, has recently joined the automaker Rivian.

A former Apple engineer has joined the automaker Rivian, known for its electric vehicles

While he was employed by Apple, Jeff Alves was the company's Director of Hardware Engineering. As part of the company's battery engineering team, he worked on various projects such as the charging system for the original Apple Watch.

Alves was also involved in the development of the now-canceled Apple Car, as his name can be seen on the related Apple patents.

Alves' move to Rivian was first spotted by the site RivianTrackr and later reported by 9to5mac. In a LinkedIn post, Alves announced his departure and detailed his experience at Apple during the 11 years of his employment with the company.

"I joined Apple in 2013 with a leap of faith. I had no idea what I would be working on, but I was hoping for something fast-paced, and I got it! I contributed to shipping the first Apple Watch by leading the charging system development," Alves said in the post. "This all happened within about 18 months of joining - lots of white board sessions, numerous emails and meetings, more than a few invaluable lessons learned and a couple of trips to China. I loved this time at Apple and the people I met!"

Alves' new role at Rivian will be Senior Director of Battery Engineering. At the company, he will work alongside his former Apple coworkers, Jonas Reinke and DJ Novotney, both of whom left Apple and joined Rivian earlier this year.

In May of 2024 it was reported that Apple may have been in talks with Rivian surrounding a potential revival of the canceled Apple Car project. The Apple Car project was purportedly scrapped in its entirety in February of 2024.

I am totally lost. I thought that Rivian was kaput. So what's up with this engineer jumping onto a sinking ship?  :/

Where? Maybe in your boondocks. But if you cared to look at the Chinese EV invasion of Europe and the US you would quickly observe two things:
    1) the fossil fuel chuggers are dead as a door nail.
    2) Toyota just lost the plot. The Chinese are the new Japanese.

Wait. Wait. I just realised who this bloke is? This is one of the engineers that worked on the Apple Car.
What an expensive farce that was.  :D :D

I think Amazon owns majority of Rivian company. Amazon is in the process of converting their entire fleet to EV using Rivian designed van.

No it isn't. Not true at all, not growing as fast as it was, but still growing.

I saw a Rivian a few days ago. I thought it was very impressive. Today I saw my first CyberTruck. I can’t wait to see what its designer will come up with when he graduates from 1st grade.

That's Lordstown, Fisker, Arci-moto, Lightspeed, Arrival, Volta, Proterra, Bright Automotive, Coda, Solo, and probably many others.

Future candidates for kaputness are Lucid, Faraday Future, Nikola, Canoo, Aptera, and least likely... Rivian.  Rivian has a reasonable amount of cash remaining.   Watch them at the end of the year to finally be gross margin positive.   Next year is crunch year for money.

lol no. It’s where we’re going. There will always be a place for both types of vehicles, but most people commute in a small radius and that use case is better served by EVs.

Which, may be the factor that led to the decision to drop the Apple Car. I am sure Apple would have been aware of that EV collapse and so avoided the Apple Crumble.

Rivian have a great product, put on the map by Ewan McGregor & Charley Boorman’s 3rd (now Electric) Motorbike odyssey in “THE LONG WAY UP” documentary series on Apple TV.

Rivian gave their production team the TWO EV Prototype 4x4s to travel in as assist vehicles. They travelled up the whole of South America in them.

Even in small to mid-size cities, you can’t go anywhere without seeing more and more EVs on the road. While there may be some market corrections going on, I think a lot of the “EV market is crumbling” chatter came from the automotive industry itself during last year’s big UAW strikes. Knowing that EVs are the future, manufacturers were playing poor-mouth in that sector in an attempt to get concessions from labor on the cars they’ll all be building in the future.

ICE enthusiasts are in for a big shock when EVs start triggering tipping points in the ICE market. For a time, decreasing demand will make gasoline cheaper. There will be a lot chest thumping and bad decisions from the bubba crowd, who will rebelliously spend more on bigger, heavier, less fuel efficient vehicles.

Then production and distribution will respond to that decreasing demand by lowering production and closing underperforming gas stations. The price will rise and gas stations will be fewer and further between. The bigger shock will come when gasoline pipelines start closing pipeline distribution terminals. The use of fuel trucks to cover the increased distances between remaining terminals and remaining gas stations will drive gasoline prices even higher.

For local commuters, charging EVs at home overnight already makes EV ownership more practical. For most, the need for public charging stations is minimal. Meanwhile, as battery technologies improve, EV ranges will increase and charging time will decrease. Sooner than anyone thinks, it’ll be the ICE vehicles that are the brunt of all the jokes about their comparative expense and impracticality. Ironically, it’ll likely be the folks in the most rural, anti-EV places that feel it first, long before the distance between gas stations approaches and the exceeds the range of their big ol’ pickup trucks. Even as fuel prices increase, they’re the ones who will notice first that an increasing portion of their fuel budget is being spent just to go buy fuel.
