Apple is expected to release an AirTag 2 next year, and a few new features and changes have already been rumored for the item tracker.

Below, we recap what to expect from the AirTag 2:

  • The new AirTag is expected to be equipped with Apple's second-generation Ultra Wideband chip for longer range. The chip debuted last year in the iPhone 15 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2, and Apple said it offers up to three times the range as its first-generation Ultra Wideband chip in the current AirTag. On the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models, there is a Precision Finding feature that can help you to find your friends in busy places, and it offers up to approximately 60 meters (around 200 feet) range. The new AirTag could offer similar range.
  • The new AirTag's built-in speaker is expected to be more difficult to remove, as a stalking-related safety measure.
  • The new AirTag is rumored to have improved integration with the Apple Vision Pro, but there are no specific details about this.
  • No major design changes are expected.

The new AirTag is rumored to launch in mid-2025. The current AirTag debuted in April 2021.

A credit card-sized AirTag would be amazing. Put it in your wallet and forget it. Even if the thickness of several stacked credit cards, having something longer and flat would fit in a lot of places that a regular AirTag can't, and there are already third-party solutions like this.

That would be great.

I'd also like to see AirTag technology built into Apple's portable devices. It won't happen, but with a specially designed battery capability to keep it working after the devices battery dies would be useful.

The new AirTag's built-in speaker is expected to be more difficult to remove, as a stalking-related safety measure.

I suspect if someone wants to stalk they will find a way to disable the speaker, even if it is harder than on the current ones.

Great! Now I can get the "item unreachable, move around to connect" message from twice as far away, and with phenomenal groundbreaking speed, never before seen in an AirTag. I'm going to be very fond of it.

I'm guessing they will add some sort of hardwired failsafe that disables the tracking features if the speaker is physically disconnected, similar to how the FaceTime camera is hardwired to the green light on Macs to prevent tampering, like an app activating the camera without the green light coming on.

The overwhelming majority of people are trying to recover lost and stolen items with AirTags.

Being able to catch a thief is more important that the 0.0000001% of the time that the device could be used to "stalk" someone. It's ridiculous that Apple is impeding the usefulness of their own product.
I think Apple just doesn't want to face the media storm of stories headlined "Man stabbed to death after tracking stolen wallet to parking lot". They are working hard to build up their "Apple satellite messaging saves hiker" headlines. You darn well the media tries to dig up every negative story they can on Apple, since Apple stories get clicks, and negative/shock value, gets the most clicks.

I've been very happy to have airtags. Once needed to find my marathon shoes in a disorganized last second packing job, and I like knowing my medical pills (put airtag in the bottle) are with me when I travel.

The title of the article is "

", but it should really say, "AirTag 2 Possibly Launching Next Year..." since everything is still a rumor. Unless MR knows more than we do. 🤔

Losing an item puts you out a few bucks. Stalking can and does lead to death. Apple has their priorities clearly in the right place on this one and your lack of empathy for the victims of stalking is frankly gross.

Easy workaround: damage the speaker so it won’t produce audio, without disconnecting it.

Damaging the speaker may be an option so it stays connected but makes no or a little sound.

Credit card sized and PLEASE find a way to work in metal. I’ve tried to find my bookbag and it was in my truck and didn’t register. Happened in a room at my job too.

Get something like a Ridge wallet and you can fit an AirTag on the clip. I've had one for a couple of years now and won't be going back to a traditional wallet.

I have a couple of airtags and 3rd party find my devices I removed the speakers from as to hopefully give me longer to track my bicycle or car if it is ever stolen. Having no sound gives me more time until the airtag is discovered and removed/deactivated.

I understand why Apple went more into the anti-stalking feature than the theft recovery feature, it makes business sense. Those situations are way more horrific than a stolen bike or car that isn't recovered because the airtag is discovered early.

(As an aside, every airtag can be traced back to their owner by Apple with a court order. If you don't want to get caught stalking, using an airtag vs a more anonymous device is really, really stupid.)

It will be interesting when the upgraded models are out to see how successful people are trying to hack them again.

Longer range is good. I am not expecting to see any other change. Will be a very minor update. Maybe a new black colour too is possible.

The only feature I'd like is a better sound, maybe lower pitch that's easier to find.

I've been within a foot of it, I can hear it, and I still can't find it. I think Apple went out of their way to make it a beep the human ear can't isolate.
