CLEVELAND (WJW/AP) — José Ramírez is a man of the people, especially Cleveland people.

The All-Star third baseman could have gone elsewhere for a much larger pile of money, instead he quietly signed a seven-year, $141 million contract with the Guardians in 2022, which includes a no-trade clause. He’s never played for another MLB franchise than Cleveland, and he said when he re-signed he wanted to stay where he felt comfortable.

And since then his stats just continue to sing.

Monday night, the superstar tied Manny Ramirez for third most home runs in franchise history, at 236. Then Tuesday, José hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning, once more helping his team beat the Baltimore Orioles and officially taking the third spot on the team’s home run list.

Albert Belle hit 242, and then it’s a good deal further to reach leader Jim Thome’s mark of 337.

José mostly spoke through a translator Monday night, until he was asked about needing only a few home runs to catch Belle.

“I got it,” Jose, who recently was on paternity leave for the birth of his third child, said in English.

“It’s another milestone, but the key is to win games and that’s what I’m focused on,” José said through a translator.

Manny played for Cleveland from 1993-2000. José is in his 12th season with the team. His contract runs through 2028.
