When debating a complex linguistic term with a colleague, I start by really listening to their perspective to get a sense of where they're coming from. I’ll bring in relevant research or examples to keep things grounded, and if there’s any common ground, I’ll point it out. From there, I try to explore where we differ in a collaborative way. It’s less about winning the argument and more about expanding both our perspectives.

I'd check the etymology of the term and its evolution in historical-cultural context to discuss what might be the semantic overtones to consider, and how this informs the term's meaning as framed in the current context.

Evidence always takes the lead. The point is, how to approach a colleague with an evidence without making them feel ‘they are not good enough’. Respect for multiple and different perspectives is always crucial in any debates. “ I see you, but you should also see this” is a great way to ‘convince’ them.

I will concur with the esteemed colleagues commenting so far Mutual respect is key Debating is an art,not an argument. It is meant to thoroughly discuss the topic at hand and reach a conclusion that is acceptable to both Thus,I would listen carefully and take notes while my colleague is speaking and then respond to their points one by one. Then we would further discuss the individual points and eventually agree completely or the particular points we agree on It is for the followers of the debate to finally evaluate our discussion Naturally,I would finally thank my colleague for their insightful contribution
