🚨 [Sufficiency Action Group] Key Message #3 🏢 Reducing the real estate sector’s footprint for a more sustainable future: essential steps for transformative change! The building sector is a major contributor to climate change, significantly exceeding planetary boundaries. A joint study by ADEME, the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC), the Institut Français pour la Performance du Bâtiment (Ifpeb), and Action for Market Transformation - A4MT for Market Transformation (A4MT), published on the occasion of #COP29, emphasizes the urgent need to rethink urban planning policies to provide sustainable and accessible living conditions for all. 🔑 Key Messages: - Limit resource demand from the outset: Optimize existing spaces and repurpose vacant buildings to reduce the sector’s footprint. A new joint study, conducted by ADEME, the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC), the Institut Français pour la Performance du Bâtiment (Ifpeb), and Action for Market Transformation - A4MT, calls for a radical shift to stay within planetary boundaries and promote climate and social justice. 🔑 Key Messages : - Sufficiency must become the cornerstone of all global public policies in the building sector. We need to question the necessity of new construction and evaluate each project against the remaining carbon budget to achieve sustainable growth. - Governments and public institutions should lead by example by applying these sufficiency measures to their own infrastructure, showcasing their feasibility and tangible benefits. Demonstrating by example is a powerful driver for meaningful change. As #COP29 approaches, a joint study from ADEME, the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC), the Institut Français pour la Performance du Bâtiment (Ifpeb) Action for Market Transformation - A4MT presents a stark finding: the only viable solution lies in sufficiency. 🔑 Key Message: It is essential to assess the necessity of each construction and adopt policies focused on demand and the available carbon budget. This means reducing or optimizing building sizes and forms to limit land, material, and energy use. 📣 [Sufficiency Action Group] New joint study by ADEME, Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC), Action for Market Transformation - A4MT, and Institut Français pour la Performance du Bâtiment (Ifpeb)! 🏢 The building sector, responsible for 37% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 50% of extracted natural resource consumption, poses a critical environmental challenge. 💡 This new study, presented at COP29, reveals that current decarbonization policies fall short of the 2030 climate targets. It shows that reaching the required 45% emissions reduction by 2030 won’t be possible without a shift towards sufficiency 🚨. ⚡ To stay within planetary boundaries and promote climate and social justice, we need to rethink our needs and focus on sufficiency.
