📸 With the rise of generative AI and synthetic images, AFP has successfully tested a “proof of concept” to certify the origins of its photographs, ensuring their authenticity across online platforms. This initiative was developed in collaboration with key industry players, including Nikon, IMATAG, and WeVerify, to create a comprehensive verification process. During the 2024 US elections, AFP combined the C2PA certification standard with an encrypted invisible watermark to secure the entire distribution chain — from camera capture to verification. "Journalism is under attack, and generative AI is blurring the lines between truth and falsehood. This successful test reaffirms AFP’s commitment to transparency and traceability, and we hope more industry players will join us in strengthening this effort," said Phil Chetwynd, AFP’s Global News Director. ⬇️ Watch the video below to find out how the verification process works.

🔎 AFP and SourceMaterial have published an investigation revealing how the growing plastic credit sector relies heavily on the polluting cement industry to burn plastic waste. Experts warn that this practice poses serious health risks to local communities and does little to stop plastic from flooding into the environment. Journalists analysed credit registries, spoke to over a dozen experts and industry players, and interviewed people living near a cement kiln in Cambodia. The investigation exposes the global trade-offs being made to manage plastic waste, which is projected to triple by 2060. ⬇️ Link to the full story by Sara Hussein in the comments.

AI and the Future of Journalism AFP’s Global News Director, Phil Chetwynd, joined William Hilderbrandt on FRANCE 24’s Scoop to discuss artificial intelligence and its impact on the media industry. He highlighted both the risks and opportunities AI presents for journalism: 📰 The challenge of AI-generated disinformation flooding the information ecosystem 🔎 The potential of AI tools to enhance investigative reporting and data analysis “The industry as a whole worries about the impact on what we would call the integrity of information. Our concern is that through AI, you'll be able to create vast amounts of poor-quality information [and disinformation] that will flood the information ecosystem,” Chetwynd said. He also spoke about AFP’s partnership with Mistral AI, which aims to strengthen the information ecosystem by ensuring fact-based, reliable content is integrated into AI models.
