Microsoft is back in the quantum game! 🏆 📢Nature Magazine just published Microsoft’s latest breakthrough, a working measurement for the Majorana qubits they are trying to build, plus a first look at a superconducting chip 🔬. “Majorana 1” 🔍 Why does this matter? Similarly to our cat qubits 🐱, Majoranas are built for error protection by design, a key ingredient to make quantum error correction practical and scaling quantum computers to thousands of logical qubits and beyond 🚀. With today's state-of-the-art, a quantum computer would need millions of qubits to be useful, this is why we need to invest in new qubits that are hardware efficient. 💬 🔍 How does it work? Majorana qubits have been the unicorns of quantum 🦄 , rare, elusive, and incredibly hard to tame. Microsoft’s results, if confirmed, suggest they’re getting closer. While Majoranas separate quantum states in actual space, our cat qubits do it in phase space: different approaches, same mission. Cat qubits don’t sleep, and neither did these students! 🐾 Alice & Bob proudly sponsored Massachusetts Institute of Technology's iQuHACK, the largest quantum computing student hackathon in the U.S., with 400+ participants on-site (and 1200 online across 6 time zones!). 🗺️ Our challenge, taken on by over 60 participants, invited students to step into the shoes of a quantum processor designer at Alice & Bob. Using the open-source Dynamiqs package and qBraid’s GPUs, they simulated the physics of our cat qubits. Unlike other challenges focused on applications, ours dove into the physics, and everybody loved it! 🤓 From Wigner plots to hilarious memes (David might have a fan club now!) and team names like “Purr-fect Qubits”, the creativity and energy blew us away. The amount of innovative ideas on how to create new cat qubit processors exceeded all our expectations. 💡 A huge thanks to David and Victor from Alice & Bob for bringing this challenge to life and making it a rewarding experience! We would need 200x fewer qubits to run Shor's Algorithm...✨ If you’ve ever wondered where this figure comes from, it’s now in Nature! 📰 Last week, Nature Communications published Alice & Bob's Diego Ruiz paper on LDPC codes with cat qubits. 🐱 This work, published for the first time last year, demonstrates how with cat qubits LDPC error correction codes become more efficient and can be implemented on 2D quantum processors! 🔬 🔎 This makes large-scale, useful quantum computers dramatically more practical and economically viable. ⚛️ This study was written in collaboration with Jérémie Guillaud, Christophe Vuillot and Inria's Anthony Leverrier & Mazyar Mirrahimi.
