Butterfly School

🌎 Curious about what has caught our attention in November? 📊 #Climatechange: COP29 reached an agreement for $300 billion annual climate finance by 2035, but developing nations criticized it as insufficient and unclear, exposing global divides ahead of COP30. 🪨 #Coal: The UK has banned new coal mines and closed this year its last coal-fired power plant in Ratcliffe on Soar in the East Midlands. 🌎 #Climate: Scientists are studying Iceland's black volcanic deserts to understand the impact of high-latitude dust on climate and weather patterns. As the dust has a unique fingerprint, it's aiming to improve climate models and predictions for global warming. 🌿 #Forest: Forests with diverse tree species, especially tropical ones, play a crucial role in combating climate change by balancing fast and slow carbon sequestration. 🧊#Antartic: The autonomous vehicle Marlin revealed warming waters under Antarctica's Ross Ice Shelf, accelerating ice loss linked to climate change and contributing to global sea level rise. While the temperature increases by four thousandths of a degree a year, it could lead to around 20 to 80 cm of additional ice loss per year over the 45 years, according to scientists. Read about it in our latest newsletter!

Why decoding compound weather events is critical? As extreme weather events like heatwaves, droughts, and storms become more frequent, they are also increasingly overlapping—triggering what scientists call #compound events. First introduced by the IPCC in 2012, these phenomena amplify risks, creating impacts far beyond what individual events could cause. Understanding compound events it’s an urgent challenge. How do simultaneous hazards, like drought and heatwaves, devastate crops? How do back-to-back events, like a heatwave followed by a drought, escalate wildfire risks? And how do distant drivers, like El Niño, reshape global storm patterns? These are the questions our team of scientists, in collaboration with the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Research Institute, set out to answer—and here is what they found: 1️⃣ Successive heatwaves and droughts increase wildfire risks in California by up to 75% during wildfire season. 2️⃣ Simultaneous drought and heat events reduce wheat yields by 70% compared to normal conditions. 3️⃣ Climate drivers like El Niño alter tropical cyclone activity, intensifying storms in some regions while weakening them in others. 🌡️ With climate models projecting a 9% rise in compound event risks by mid-century under high-emission scenarios in some regions of the world, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Better science can help us anticipate, adapt to, and mitigate climate change. 🔬 Dive into the full article to explore their scientific work here: https://lnkd.in/grPFQpJU

📅 As of today, ESMA’s #guidelines on fund names apply for new funds. If you're launching a new fund, here's what you should know. The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) is introducing new guidelines to ensure greater transparency and reliability in the use of sustainability-related terms in fund names. Coming into effect for new funds today, November 21, these rules establish stricter criteria to use a sustainability-related term in the product's name. If you use terms like “transition”, “environmental” or “sustainability”, the following guidelines apply: 1️⃣ 80% of investments must meet the environmental or social characteristic or have sustainable investment objectives, 2️⃣ The fund must comply with sector-based exclusion criteria 3️⃣ Additional requirements may apply depending on the term used such as impact, transition or sustainability 🗓 For new funds: guidelines enter into force today. 🗓 For existing funds: another six-month transition period is provided to ensure compliance with these new guidelines. ✅ These rules aim to provide greater transparency on the market, reduce #greenwashing risks and provide a clearer message about the sustainability goals that are pursued. As the era of climate action shifts from commitment to implementation, businesses face mounting pressure to address climate #adaptation and mitigation. The climate commitments made in the 2016 Paris Agreement aimed to limit global warming to below 2°C. Yet, recent projections place warming between 2.2°C and 3.4°C by 2100. While many companies focus on reducing CO₂ emissions, adaptation (the ability to respond and adjust to climate impacts) remains less explored. For companies, adapting means preparing for #climaterisks and building #resilience while sustaining efforts toward #carbon reduction. AXA Climate’s latest guide, “Managing the inevitable: How can we meet the challenge of Climate Adaptation?” provides a structured roadmap to help businesses navigate this critical task. Drawing on insights from numerous interactions with partners, customers, scientists, and experts, through this guide, we sought to lay the foundations for a thought process aimed at answering the following question: how can we set the wheels of adaptation in motion within companies? 📊 Only 8% of plastic waste is recycled each year Last week at AXA Climate, Eva Moreau, co-creator of La Fresque du Plastique, shared insight with us about the #GlobalPlasticTreaty: an initiative run by the #UnitedNations to address the environmental effects of plastic pollution. 💡What are the goals of the Global Plastic Treaty ? The Global Plastic Treaty is an international agreement in progress, designed to combat plastic pollution worldwide. Participants in the Global Plastic Treaty include 175 UN member states, as well as NGOs, industry stakeholders, and scientific experts. As plastic pollution knows no borders, Eva Moreau shared some topics of the treaty: - Production of plastic: regulations on primary plastic polymers - Chemicals and plastics of concern: elimination and bans of chemicals, polymers of concern and avoidable plastic products - Avoidable plastic products: encouraging alternatives to plastic products - Circular economy: promoting reduce, reuse, refill, repair and recycling - Environmental impact: addressing the effects of plastic pollution on ecosystems - Health impacts: studying the effects of plastic pollution on human health - International cooperation: ensuring global compliance and cooperation and financing system 🗓 A Global Push for Companies to Tackle Plastic Pollution The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) was formed to draft the treaty. Started in 2022, the final session scheduled at the end of November (in Busan, Korea) aims to conclude the treaty negotiations. Ultimately, the treaty aims to drive a global transformation, encouraging companies to lead the way in drastically reducing plastic pollution and championing practices that support environmental sustainability and protect human health on a global scale.

Taking nature into account is a strategic necessity for the agri-food sector. According to the World Economic Forum, almost half of the world's GDP is moderately to highly dependent on biodiversity. Yet ecosystem decline is accelerating — impacting crop yields, water resources, and the resilience of the whole agri supply chain. For agri-food companies, understanding and managing interactions with nature is critical. The #TNFD provides a framework to help them understand, assess and disclose their dependencies and impacts on nature. But understanding all the TNFD documentation, and implementing it remains a big challenge. That's why AXA Climate and BL évolution have decided to develop a practical guide, to help you understand: 1️⃣ the objectives of TNFD 2️⃣ its methodology and tools, 3️⃣ each step through various case studies, 4️⃣ best practices You can find it here: https://lnkd.in/e7Upk_A7
