🔔 Did you know? A 24-hour warning before a hazardous event can reduce economic losses by 30%.🔔    Over the past 50 years, weather, climate, and water-related hazards have been responsible for half of all documented disasters all over the globe (WMO, 2024). Alarmingly, the number of natural disasters has surged five-fold during this time—yet only 50% of countries currently have access to early warning systems - EWS.     But what makes an early warning system truly effective?According to the World Meteorological Organization (2017) and the Climate Resilience Alliance (2024), an effective EWS includes the following 4 components:    🌐 Risk Knowledge: Understanding hazards, vulnerabilities, and risk exposure.  🌐 Monitoring & Warning: Observing, analysing, and issuing timely alerts.  🌐 Dissemination & Communication: Ensuring warnings are accessible, actionable, and understood by all.  🌐 Response Capability: Developing plans or allocating resources.    As water-related hazards grow more frequent and intense, BWI is stepping up to empower individuals, communities, and organizations to face these challenges head-on. BWI's own early warning system aims to enhance preparedness and minimize impacts by providing timely, actionable insights.     🎥Curious about how it works? We invite you to explore its features and capabilities in this short video: https://lnkd.in/emP4SFzG.   #EarlyWarningSystems #DisasterPreparedness #ClimateAction #WaterHazards #CommunityResilience #SustainableFuture #RiskReduction #WeatherSafety

📖 What is the Role of River Discharge Forecasting in Flood Prevention? 📖 River discharge forecasting is a vital tool in the fight against flooding. Accurate forecasting of water flow levels helps communities prepare and mitigate the devastating impacts of floods. For this reason, our blog post explores this critical topic with analysis and thought-provoking case studies from: 💧 France 💧 South Asia 💧 Senegal 💧 Sri Lanka, Panama, and Vietnam 🔗 You can read the full blog post here: https://lnkd.in/eGVQXpyM 💡Nations investing in robust forecasting systems have saved countless lives and billions in flood-related damages. For example, a 2024 report by the French Ministry of Ecology reveals that flood prevention efforts in France have prevented nearly €20 billion in damages over the past decade. A significant portion of these savings is attributed to advancements in river discharge forecasting, showcasing the importance of continued innovation and investment in this area. #BWI #Hydrology #FloodForecasting #riverdischarge #forecastingsystems #Water #Eau #Hydrologie

💧This week's performance report evaluates the effectiveness of BWI's discharge forecast model for the Tarn River, with a particular emphasis on the Countal outlet in southern France.💧 🔍 How did our model perform?  Our discharge forecast model records a high overall performance, with an NNSE of 0.72. 🌟 What does a high NNSE mean?  A high model testing performance (NNSE = 0.72) indicates that the model's forecasts closely align with the observed data. The well-simulated baseflow can prove valuable for water resource management, early warning systems, and planning of critical flood prevention infrastructures. Although the model successfully forecasted flood occurrence, it underestimated the peak flow, as seen in March 2024. This discrepancy may stem from limited weather data resolution and a shorter model training period. The estimated hydrograph also shows a faster recession of peak flows than observed. As more data and data sources become available, accuracy in extreme flow forecasting and hydrograph recession rates should improve. 🔍 Explore the performance report below. #Hydrology #ClimateChange #BWI #RiverDischarge #VirtualStations #PerformanceReport #BasinDigitization #WaterManagement #AI #Innovation #Tarn #France
