Providing free marine data & services to enable marine policy implementation support Blue growth & scientific innovation
À propos
The Copernicus Marine Service (or Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service) is the marine component of the Copernicus Programme of the European Union. It provides free, regular and systematic authoritative information on the state of the Blue (physical), White (sea ice) and Green (biogeochemical) ocean, on a global and regional scale. It is funded by the European Commission (EC) and implemented by Mercator Ocean International. It is designed to serve EU policies and International legal Commitments related to Ocean Governance, to cater for the needs of society at large for global ocean knowledge and to boost the Blue Economy across all maritime sectors by providing free-of-charge state-of-the-art ocean data and information. It provides key inputs that support major EU and international policies and initiatives and can contribute to: combating pollution, marine protection, maritime safety and routing, sustainable use of ocean resources, developing marine energy resources, blue growth, climate monitoring, weather forecasting, and more. It also aims to increase awareness amongst the general public by providing European and global citizens with information about ocean-related issues.

Last week, at the #OceanPredict Symposium in Paris 🇫🇷, our experts joined leading ocean professionals, industry representatives, and users of #OceanData 🌊 to discuss the latest advances and future developments in ocean prediction & global sustainability. The #CopernicusMarine service was highlighted in several presentations by experts from Mercator Ocean International and NOWSystems: 🔹Jean-Michel Lellouche highlighted improvements in forecast accuracy and developments across #CopernicusMarine and Mercator Ocean International systems. 🔹Gilles G. provided a global perspective on ‘blue’ and ‘white’ ocean reanalysis available in our catalogue 📔. He identified improvements in numerical models, including those for sea ice, sea surface height, sea level, and more. 🔹marie D. stressed the importance of expanding our service through co-design with users and marine and coastal experts to increase collaboration between stakeholders 🌍. 🔹Stefania A. Ciliberti underlined the future integration of #CopernicusMarine into the #EUDTO and the role of multi-model inter-comparison systems for simulating ocean physics. Overall, all speakers highlighted the contribution of our service to ocean prediction, particularly to forecasting accuracy, numerical models, and international operational oceanography.

#30DayMapChallenge - Day 28: The Blue Planet 🔵 🌎 Our contribution highlights one of the key Blue Ocean variables: sea water salinity🧂 Why is monitoring #salinity important? 🌡️ Ocean circulation: Salinity, along with temperature, drives ocean currents which regulate global weather and climate. 💧 The water cycle: Changes in salinity reveal shifts in evaporation, precipitation, and freshwater inputs from rivers and ice melt. 🌱 Marine ecosystems: Many marine species depend on stable salinity levels for survival and reproduction. With #CopernicusMarine #OpenData, researchers and scientists can study global ocean dynamics while creating impactful visualisations, like this one showing global seawater salinity on 14 November 🔽 Create your own stunning #dataviz with our #MyOceanViewer and follow the image below to see how it's done! Explore salinity concentration in the #MyOceanViewer 👇 https://lnkd.in/encvjguq
