The EU is proposing 27 national funding plans to simplify how money is allocated. Sounds efficient, right? Here is the catch though : local governments, who actually make things happen in cities, could lose direct access to funding. That means more bureaucracy, slower action, and less room for cities to lead on climate, innovation, and local development. The big decisions could end up in the hands of a few national institutions, instead of those working closest to communities. Mayors and local leaders are ready to invest in a sustainable future, but they need a seat at the table to do it. If funding is centralized, how do we make sure cities and regions still have the power to drive change? This conversation is just starting. Keep it going here : https://lnkd.in/eTpjq4S9

About the leaked EU communication on the Affordable Energy Action Plan: ☠️ There is too much focus on fossil fuels such as gas and on nuclear energy. We believe that such plan should focus more on renewables, to ensure everyone can get access to locally sourced renewable energy. 🏡 Households & SMEs are essentially forgotten in the draft, that puts much stronger focus on industrial customers. 💶 We need more recognition of the role local governments and communities can play in making energy more affordable for consumers. Municipalities are asked to speed up permitting, identify acceleration areas, develop H&C plan but in the leaked draft of the plan there is no reference to providing them with the corresponding means and knowledge. 👏 We agree NECPs should evolve in strategic investment plans. We hope that in the revised governance regulation there will be more recognition of the role and possible contributions that local goverments could provide to decision making around the national energy policy framework.
