  • 🎉 The entire ESMERALDA team wishes you happy end of year celebrations with your friends and family. 🫂 We look forward to 2025 a year with many challenges and wonderful perspectives ahead! As a treat for the eye, some art from space. 🎁 Our partner mundialis GmbH & Co. KG kindly let us use this image of the Mont Blanc located in France and Italy. "For this land/water composition, channels 8A (visible and near infrared), 11 (short-wave infrared) and 4 (visible red) were used. Healthy vegetation appears in orange and older vegetation in green. The ground and clouds also appear in different shades of green. Water is painted in shades of blue while ice appears in dynamic magenta. As the bands 8A and 11 are only available in a 20 m resolution, they were sharpened using pan image sharpening. For this purpose, a pseudo-panchromatic band was used, which was generated from the bands that are available in a 10 m resolution (bands 2, 3, 4 and 8)." #satelliteimage #earthobservatioon

  • LDN & EUDR you go it! But what’s the link with ESMERALDA?! 🎯 ESMERALDA's mission is to fill critical gaps in the implementation of large-scale LDN projects. By providing a new way to centralise all data relevant to the planning of such a project in one platform. Planning will significantly be simplified. It also facilitates the involvement of local stakeholders in designing the project in a co-creation process, collecting all information in a central geo-referenced database. 💰 The second gap addressed by ESMERALDA is related to funding. By focusing on sustainable business models, the economic viability of the project is established. The confidence of investors, who provide significant sums of money, is gained through regular satellite monitoring at short intervals, which minimises issues such as corruption and misappropriation of funds. 🪺 In addition, the projects are designed so that one-third of the land is reserved for wildlife, one-third is used to produce high-value commodities for the world market, and one-third is used to produce staple foods for the local market. This will make the restored areas economically viable and shorten the break-even period of the project. Lastly, the ESMERALDA TRACKER monitoring tool will enable new revenue streams, such as carbon credits. #SustainableDevelopment #GlobalImpact #remotesensing #environment #sustainablefinance #ecosystemrestoration #landegradationneutrality

🌍 One Goal, Many Ripples: Why Achieving Life on Land (SDG 15) is Vital for All SDGs and how the EUDR supports this! In 2015, the UN set 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for a better world by 2030. Among them, Goal 15 — Life on Land— is pivotal, focusing on sustainable forest management, combating desertification, and halting land degradation. However, with only 5 years left to achieve these goals, progress towards achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) is lagging, as can be seen in its 2024 report on the agenda’s progress. This isn't just a setback for Goal 15; it impacts other goals like ending poverty (SDG 1) and hunger (SDG 2). 🔍 Land Degradation, when set in the bigger picture, leads to a decrease in food production, as the degraded soil is not able to yield the necessary amount of vegetation. Consequently, with a reduced production of food, issues like world hunger are prevented from being solved and even more difficult to be eradicated. This chain reaction even pushes communities to migrate due to worsening living conditions. At ESMERALDA, we believe no one should face such difficult choices due to external pressures. This is why it is of paramount importance to focus on achieving LDN through regulations such as the EUDR —not just for life on land but for the success of all SDGs. 🚀 #SustainableDevelopmentGoals #LandDegradationNeutrality #SDG #Sustainability #EUDR #LandDegradation #Earth #progress

🌍 Building a Greener Future: Why the EUDR is Key to Achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) In the continuing series of looking at (Land Degradation Neutrality) in connection with the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), one might ask why the EUDR is incremental in achieving LDN. This can be answered by looking at the root cause of LDN, how the EUDR tries to solve this problem and what global effects can already be seen: 1️⃣ Addressing the Root Cause: Deforestation and Desertification 🪴 • The EUDR requires a due diligence statement from operators and suppliers, looking to import their products into the EU, a unique focus is set on proving the land, goods are sourced from, to be deforestation free. • Deforestation accelerates desertification—a major driver of land degradation caused by rising temperatures and low rainfall. • Desertification leads to soil erosion, loss of organic carbon, and reduced biodiversity, which are critical challenges in sustainable land management. 2️⃣ Transforming Agriculture: Economic Incentives for Sustainability 🚜 • The EUDR influences market dynamics by requiring proof of deforestation-free practices, discouraging unsustainable farming. • Producers unable to meet these requirements lose access to the EU market, motivating a shift toward sustainable methods. • This economic push could encourage reforestation and innovation in agricultural models. 3️⃣ A Positive Ripple Effect: Global Impact and Local Action 🤝 • ESMERALDA has received feedback from Cocoa producers in West Africa, facing declining yields, that they wish to explore more sustainable plantation practices. • This feedback exemplifies how the EUDR drives local actions that support global goals, from combating CO2 emissions to fostering viable land use. • By addressing land degradation and promoting sustainable practices, the EUDR becomes a catalyst for achieving LDN. #Sustainability #EURegulations #DeforestationFree #LandDegradationNeutrality #ClimateAction #Reforestation #SustainableAgriculture
