🔍 At ESMERALDA we focus on Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) and have been observing the European deforestation regulation (EUDR) closely. Its purpose and implications may still remain unclear to the general public, so we thought we'd share our findings with you. Our intern Xenia Paulsen was kind enough to summarize them in short articles. 📣 🤔 What is LDN and how does it connect with the EUDR? LDN defines the overarching goal of stopping, neutralising and if possible improving land from loosing it’s life supporting capacities. Land Degradation occurs when soil diminishes in fertility and its ability to sustain and produce vegetation. 🌿 In order to achieve neutrality, the focus lies on preventing further degradation to occur and preferably to restore the soil which has been affected. It is defined by the UNCCD as 'a state whereby the amount and quality of land resources, necessary to support ecosystem functions and services and enhance food security, remains stable or increases within specified temporal and spatial scales and ecosystems. 🚧 Land Degradation is an increasingly occurring problem due to climate change. With increasing climate catastrophes such as flash floods or droughts, as well as direct human-made disasters such as mass deforestation, land loses its essential minerals and carbon stores, leading to a decline in biodiversity and viability of plants. Thus a vicious cycle is created, where global warming contributes to land degradation and land degradation in turn adds to global warming. In order to neutralise - and more ambitiously reverse - this process, the effort should lie in sustaining and protecting the soil. 🇪🇺 The European Union Deforestation Regulation 2023 (EUDR) is one step in this direction. By prohibiting the import into the European Union of certain materials produced on land which was deforested after the 1st of January 2020, this regulation promotes the protection and the recognition of the inherent importance of forests. It furthers the goal of neutralising land degradation, by regulating the economic incentive which land is often degraded for. Thus, the regulation is a tool which supports the overarching goal of achieving land degradation neutrality. #ldn #SustainableDevelopment #GlobalImpact #environment #ecosystemrestoration #EUDR #EU

🌍 Reflecting on COP16 in Cali: Progress and Challenges in Biodiversity Conservation 🌱 The 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) recently concluded in Cali, Colombia, bringing important strides but also underscoring areas where we need to do more. Here are the highlights: 1️⃣ Indigenous Peoples’ Advisory Body: COP16 saw the creation of a subsidiary body that integrates Indigenous perspectives into biodiversity decisions. This will ensure that traditional knowledge is recognised and valued in conservation efforts. 2️⃣ Benefit-Sharing from Genetic Resources: Agreements were reached for corporations to share financial benefits from natural genetic resources, with a 0.1% fee on revenues directed to a new fund—half of which supports Indigenous communities directly. 3️⃣ Recognition of People of African Descent: For the first time, the contributions of African-descended communities in biodiversity were acknowledged, emphasizing inclusive and diverse conservation efforts. Despite these achievements, COP16 highlighted a critical gap: new financial pledges amounted to $163 million, far below what’s needed to effectively tackle global biodiversity loss. 🌍 This shortfall raises concerns about meeting the ambitious goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, including protecting 30% of the planet and restoring ecosystems by 2030. As we reflect on COP16, it’s clear that inclusiveness, transparency, and more robust financing will be essential to preserve biodiversity for future generations. 🌱 #Biodiversity #COP16 #SustainableDevelopment #IndigenousRights #EnvironmentalJustice #Conservation

🍀 Making a promise is one thing... keeping it is another. 🍀 About two years ago in Montreal, the international community agreed on the 30 by 30 principle. The idea was to protect 30 percent of the Earth's land and water biodiversity by 2030. Countries were also supposed to develop strategies to reduce subsidies that harm the environment (about $500 billion by 2030). This week's negotiations showed that much progress remains to be made. Observers are concerned about the pace and commitment of countries to these goals. Some 158 countries (or 81% of all countries recognised by the UN) have yet to submit their plans to meet the targets. The implementation of this agreement is crucial in setting the course for humanity in the decades to come. We are keeping a critical eye on what is happening and are not losing hope for last-minute agreements and solutions, as we have seen in the past. Humanity just needs to get its act together and implement the actions it's committed to. 🏔 Colombia is Cal(l)i-ng! 🐚 Since the beginning of this week world leaders and experts have come together in Colombia for the COP 16 on biodiversity by @unbiodiversity. The objectives are: - Reviewing the state of implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework - Review the alignment of the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans of the parties with the Framework - Further develop the monitoring framework and advance resource mobilization for the Global Biodiversity Framework - And much more ESMERALDA-TRACKER is a powerful tool for biodiversity monitoring. We are therefore keeping a close eye on the outcome of this COP. Did you know that Colombia is twice the size of France and has one of the world's richest biodiversity? #COP16Colombia #PeaceWithNature #GlobalImpact #remotesensing #ForNature #Biodiversity Alain Retiere Hinrich Paulsen 🇪🇺 Jürgen Ackermann Markus Neteler Michel Ackermann Nicolas Ackermann Philippe GISQUET Oliver Herrmann

⏰ 12 months extra time ⏰ The implementation of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) has just been delayed by one year. It will now come into force on 30 December 2025 for large companies and on 30 June 2026 for micro and small enterprises. 🌳🌲 The regulation aims to combat deforestation. Any company that imports, transforms and/or trades in goods that may come from deforested areas must be able to prove that its products are indeed deforestation-free. The problem was that many companies were still uncertain about how to implement the regulation. Questions remained, such as the type of monitoring and reporting required to prove that goods are deforestation-free. The additional time should allow companies to put in place processes and tools to track and certify their supply chains. ✅ ESMERALDA TRACKER provides such a tool to track land use change and identify deforested areas in your supply chain. If you are looking for a suitable tool with an experienced team of satellite data analysts and ecological experts, we should talk!
