🔍 At ESMERALDA we focus on Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) and have been observing the European deforestation regulation (EUDR) closely. Its purpose and implications may still remain unclear to the general public, so we thought we'd share our findings with you. Our intern Xenia Paulsen was kind enough to summarize them in short articles. 📣
🤔 What is LDN and how does it connect with the EUDR?
LDN defines the overarching goal of stopping, neutralising and if possible improving land from loosing it’s life supporting capacities. Land Degradation occurs when soil diminishes in fertility and its ability to sustain and produce vegetation.
🌿 In order to achieve neutrality, the focus lies on preventing further degradation to occur and preferably to restore the soil which has been affected. It is defined by the UNCCD as 'a state whereby the amount and quality of land resources, necessary to support ecosystem functions and services and enhance food security, remains stable or increases within specified temporal and spatial scales and ecosystems.
🚧 Land Degradation is an increasingly occurring problem due to climate change. With increasing climate catastrophes such as flash floods or droughts, as well as direct human-made disasters such as mass deforestation, land loses its essential minerals and carbon stores, leading to a decline in biodiversity and viability of plants. Thus a vicious cycle is created, where global warming contributes to land degradation and land degradation in turn adds to global warming. In order to neutralise - and more ambitiously reverse - this process, the effort should lie in sustaining and protecting the soil.
🇪🇺 The European Union Deforestation Regulation 2023 (EUDR) is one step in this direction. By prohibiting the import into the European Union of certain materials produced on land which was deforested after the 1st of January 2020, this regulation promotes the protection and the recognition of the inherent importance of forests. It furthers the goal of neutralising land degradation, by regulating the economic incentive which land is often degraded for. Thus, the regulation is a tool which supports the overarching goal of achieving land degradation neutrality.
