The registration for the ESRF's 35th annual User Meeting is now open! It will be held from 10-12 February 2025 on the EPN Campus in Grenoble (site of the ESRF, ILL, EMBL-Grenoble and IBS). The event will bring together the international community of ESRF users, beamline staff and the ESRF User Organisation for three days of engaging tutorials, insightful plenary sessions, and user-dedicated microsymposia. The User Meeting, just a few weeks before the March 2025 proposal submission deadline, is an opportunity to hear about the stimulating research carried out, to showcase your own research and to participate in tutorials and practicals designed to help you best exploit your ESRF data. Could social bonds be the key to human big brains? 🧠 A study of the fossil teeth of early Homo from Georgia dating back 1.77 million years reveals, thanks to the ESRF in Grenoble, a prolonged childhood despite a small brain and an adulthood comparable to that of the great apes. This discovery suggests that an extended childhood, combined with cultural transmission in three-generation social groups, may have triggered the evolution of a large brain like that of modern humans, rather than the reverse. Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are higher than ever, mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels and other anthropogenic activities. This, in turn, increases global temperatures🌡️ , impacts sea levels and the ocean ecosystems. A potential solution to this crisis would be to trap and store CO2 underground as solid minerals, which is a natural process that occurs over long periods thanks to the reaction of CO2 with rocks 🪨 in the Earth’s crust and mantle. Scientists have been studying the injection of CO2 in the subsurface for years. “The natural process is very effective but too slow, so we wonder whether we could somehow accelerate it so that large quantities of CO2 could be injected underground, without leakage”, explains Francois Renard , director of the Njord Centre at the University of Oslo and ESRF user. Renard, in collaboration with Wenlu Zhu from the University of Maryland and Benoit Cordonnier at the ESRF, is investigating how to massively store carbon dioxide (CO2) underground by copying nature. The researchers are now carrying out experiments at the ESRF's BM18 beamline with the aim to accelerate such a process. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ea-bidHs
