ISWA heads to Buenos Aires this October for the 41st edition of the ISWA World Congress, hosted by ARS - Asociación para el Estudio de los Residuos Sólidos. Join us at #ISWA2025 as a delegate, sponsor or... special session speaker! ISWA's Scientific Journal, Waste Management and Research publishes a special issue for each World Congress. This year will be no different! WM&R announces a call for papers: we're looking for submissions that highlight the entire spectrum of waste management, waste technology and the circular economy in the broadest sense. The call aims to collect evidence and research on the contributions of sound waste management towards climate control, as part of ISWA`s ongoing efforts to raise awareness of the waste sector's contributions to solving this global challenge. All papers published in the Special Issue will also have the opportunity to be presented in the WM&R Special Session at the 2025 ISWA World Congress! 🌟 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱!🌟 2024 marked the first full year of the French Solid Waste Partnership. Through our work with members and partners, we were able to amplify the voice of the waste management sector and contribute to elevating this issue to the highest political level. 📢 In 2025 we will continue our actions to reach strong international commitments to support local waste management improvement everywhere. 🌟  𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲́𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 ! 🌟 2024 a marqué la première année complète du Partenariat Français pour les Déchets. However, delegates agreed to reconvene in 2025 to continue discussions.   - 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: A major point of the negotiation was finding an agreement on reducing virgin plastic production. Some countries advocated for globally binding rules to enforce reductions, while others preferred a country-by-country approach. Yet, no solutions have been found to reach a consensus.   - 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Environmentally Sound Management of waste, including prevention, circularity and safe disposal, appears to have been one of the only consensual topic (see Draft Article 8 of the Chair’s text—free of brackets). However, whether this provision will be legally-binding or voluntary remains to be seen.   - 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘆: An encouraging outcome was the growing number of countries advocating for an ambitious and binding agreement. The switch from technical discussions to increasingly political discussions is perceived as a positive trend to achieve the original ambition.   📢 While this is encouraging news for our advocacy to implement ESM of waste everywhere (find below), we hope that the initial focus of “eliminating plastic pollution” will steer discussions and decisions in a future INC5.2.   #INC5 #PlasticPollution #WasteManagement #AquaticEnvironments #Sustainability #CircularEconomy

🌍 Day 3 of INC-5: Driving Action on Plastic Pollution As discussions intensify at the 5th session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop a legally binding treaty on plastic pollution, we share our latest Technical Note. This note builds on the version presented at INC-4 and highlights the mechanisms needed to support local authorities to implement municipal waste management systems tailored to national and local conditions. ⚙️ It focuses on five key mechanisms: -       Prevention through three levels of action: raising awareness, transitioning production systems, and evolving economic models. -       Public policies that define a national strategy and the associated regulatory framework. -       Funding mechanisms to support implementation. -       Integrated planning to support territorial synergies. -       Training and research to strengthen staff skills and support a just transition for informal workers. 📃 Read the Technical Note and explore how waste management can play a pivotal role in combating plastic pollution. #INC5 #PlasticPollution #WasteManagement #CircularEconomy #Sustainability 

🌍 Today marks the first day of INC-5, the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee working to finalize the world's first international treaty to combat plastic pollution. 📘 As plastic waste continues to harm aquatic biodiversity and human health through food chains, the need for global solutions is urgent.
