EU-funded project promoting comprehensive policies to end gender-based violence in academia & research

À propos

UniSAFE has finalised its mission: generating new insights on gender-based violence in universities and research organisations, developing recommendations and operational tools for institutions to address GBV. Starting March 2024 the GenderSAFE project, funded by the European Union, builds on the outputs developed by #UniSAFE and takes the work a step further by promoting comprehensive policies to end GBV in universities and research organisations and establish safe, inclusive, and respectful environments. Its strategy includes capacity-building, mutual learning and exchange, setting up instruments to monitor institutional policies and promoting policy uptake by national authorities and research funding organisations.

🔶 As we approach the finale of our joint #16DaysOfActivism campaign with GenderSAFE, we're looking ahead with determination. In GENDERACTIONplus, we're excited to tease an upcoming position paper, which will spotlight how academic freedom intersects with efforts to combat gender-based violence across the European Research Area. 💬 "Gender-based violence undermines the academic freedom of staff and students throughout the European Research Area. This ongoing epidemic not only puts individuals at risk but also severely impedes the quality of research and education. Fostering zero tolerance for gender-based violence is essential for the future development of knowledge and innovation." – Fredrik Bondestam, Associate Professor at Uppsala University and author of the upcoming PP 🔥While the #16DaysOfActivism campaign is closing, our fight against gender-based violence continues. Together with GenderSAFE, we remain committed to fostering safe, inclusive spaces, building on the knowledge and momentum shared throughout this campaign. Finally, we remain steadfast in our support for the Zero Tolerance approach, which is essential and non-negotiable. 🧡 A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported this campaign and to all the gender equality advocates who stand up against challenges every day, creating inclusive and safe spaces for all. #ZeroTolerancetoGBV

Institutions must be accountable for their actions to end gender-based violence❗ In the drive for #GenderEquality, safety, and dignity in research and innovation, institutions should define comprehensive measures to ensure that their gender-based violence policies are implemented. The European Research Area’s Zero-Tolerance Code of Conduct calls on institutional leaders to implement concrete accountability measures to eradicate #GenderBasedViolence. This includes: ✅ Clear, accessible reporting channels & timely investigations ✅ Dedicated leadership to oversee and enforce policies ✅ Skilled case managers trained in trauma-informed, victim-centred approaches ✅ Defined sanctions for policy breaches, tailored to each institution ✅ Ongoing monitoring to build trust and ensure sustainability Let’s commit to #ZeroTolerance! 👉 Find out more about institutional accountability: https://lnkd.in/ewHCP8uN 👉 Get familiar with the Zero Tolerance Code of Conduct and pledge today: https://lnkd.in/ejRx_cQY #ZeroTolerancetoGBV #16Days #EndGBV #GenderEquality #SafeResearch

🔊FEMM Hearing: The challenges faced by women with disabilities ♿ This week marks the European Parliament’s second Disability Rights Week, and yesterday was the International Day of Persons with Disabilities—a fitting backdrop for today’s FEMM hearing, which highlighted the unique challenges faced by women with disabilities in healthcare, employment, and societal participation. 📈 Experts in disability rights and gender equality shared troubling statistics: 1 in 3 women with disabilities is at risk of poverty or social exclusion, and only 1 in 5 is active in the labour market. They stressed the critical need for specialized services, access to justice, and inclusive decision-making processes. 💡Discussions emphasized how addressing intersectionality—such as gender and disability—can lead to more equitable policies. Inclusive workplaces, for example, were shown to outperform less diverse ones, proving that breaking down barriers benefits everyone. 🔎 Our @GENDERACTIONplus position paper on intersectionality explores why it’s crucial to consider overlapping inequalities in shaping inclusive policies. It offers actionable recommendations to advance inclusivity in #HigherEducation, #Research, and #Innovation. 📕Read the position paper to learn how to foster inclusivity at every level. Together, we can ensure that no one is left behind. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eyngYUDN

❓ How often do we witness institutions shielding “respected members of the community” against allegations of #GenderBasedViolence, deterring further victims/survivors from #reporting incidents? Reporting gender-based violence requires immense courage. However, the reality for many survivors is that doing so becomes a deeply painful process and, in some cases, even causes them to relive a traumatic experience. 🛡️Institutions have a crucial role to play not only to protect their staff and students, but also to ensure all procedures addressing cases of gender-based violence place the needs and priorities of victims/survivors of violence at the forefront of any response, adopting a victim-centred approach. The #ZeroTolerance #Codeofconduct published by the European Commission invites research and academic institutions to adopt a “whole-of-institution, trauma-informed and victim- and survivor-centred approach”. During these #16Days of activism against gender-based violence led with our sister project GENDERACTIONplus, we look at what this means, and how can it be implemented in practice: ✔️ Putting the needs and safety of victims/survivors first. ✔️ Avoiding re-traumatisation during procedures. ✔️ Ensuring sensitive, trauma-informed support at every step. ✔️And more! ➡️ Read through our recommendations: https://lnkd.in/eK_TjpPP
