Closure by Decree: Museo del Traje, Buenos Aires/Argentina Please sign the petition "No al cierre del Museo de la Historia del Traje" ---------------------- The closure by decree of the Museum of the History of Costume: Victoria Salías, the director of the establishment, was baffled by the decision, since she was convinced that the institution was “gaining territory” with the recent exhibition that opened in the Palacio Libertad, former Kirchner Cultural Center. “For 4 years I have been asking that the museum move to a larger place to have a larger audience,” she responded to the official argument that they closed it due to low attendance. “We found out yesterday morning from the Official Gazette. We did not have any official information about it,” Vicky Salías, director of the Costume Museum, admitted to Infobae, upon hearing the news of its sudden closure by decree. “In fact, last Thursday we inaugurated an exhibition on the sixth floor of the Centro Cultural Kirchner (CCK) - current Palacio Libertad - and its director, Valeria Ambrosio, told us that that room was going to remain as a permanent space for the Costume Museum. So when everything indicated that we were gaining territory, but it turned out that we were not,” Salías lamented about the official decision. The measure, informed through an operational reorganization of the Ministry of Culture, includes the repeal of the executive function of the current director and entails the disappearance of the institution as an independent entity. However, it was clarified that although the museum will close its doors, it will continue with its exhibitions in other cultural centers. Silk and Cultural Heritage in Europe
The ARACNE Project (Acronym for "Advocating the Role of Silk Art and Cultural Heritage at National and European Scale"), insipired by the Greek mythology, where the silk-spinning goddess Arachne transformed into a spider, is a pioneering Italian-led initiative among the three projects funded by the European Commission under the "Research and Innovation on Cultural Heritage and Cultural and Creative Industries" call (HORIZON-CL2-2022-HERITAGE-01-02). Our mission with #ARACNE is to contribute to the creation of a vast and interconnected innovation ecosystem centered around silk in Europe. We envision silk not only as an industrial sector but also as a tool for expressing cultural and landscape heritage, bridging culture, tradition, and modern industrial production within an ideal network of exchange and vision. ARACNE brings together 11 partners and 3 associated partners from 7 European and non-European countries, fostering international collaboration. Here are some of our specific objectives: 📚 Knowledge and memory enhancement: reviving the European silk innovation ecosystem. 🎨 Human-centric silk-based creative solutions: leveraging cutting-edge digital technologies. 💼 Innovative strategies and business models: paving the way for cultural and creative organizations. 🌍 Establishing a European Silk Road: celebrating silk's tangible and intangible cultural heritage. 📢 Raising awareness: advocating for the importance of the silk industry in Europe. 🏛️ Strengthening European cultural identity and competitiveness for a resilient post-crisis society. ♻️ Implementing the European Green Deal, New European Bauhaus, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Vivent les Catherinettes! ------------------ The 25th of November is the saint’s day of St Cathrine of Alexandria and it is a very special holiday among people working in the field of fashion in Paris: traditionally the workshops celebrate their Catherinettes. On this day an unmarried 25 year old woman or man working in the field of fashion, specifically as a seamstress or a milliner, automatically becomes a Catherinette. They receive an extraordinary hat made out of green and yellow materials. St Cathrine generally is a patron saint of librarians and scholars as well for all people who work with wheels: the spiked wheel of her martyrdom shattered when she touched it. How did it happen that Saint Catherine became the patron saint of seamstresses and milliners in Paris and some other places in France? The tradition of this custom reflects the women’s role in society and it is well surprising how this custom reinvents itself by adapting to modern changes. Caprile Lorenzo, Canal de Isabel II, Madrid/Spain ------------------ Canal de Isabel II hosts the exhibition “Caprile Lorenzo”, a journey through the life and work of the couturier Lorenzo Caprile, through his most iconic dresses, which have already become Fashion History. The exhibition is based on the premise of separating the couturier from the person in order to understand his career and his creations from the origin, from the essence, from his inspirations, obsessions, influences and passions. It has more than 100 Haute Couture pieces, accompanied by an important selection of works of art by great masters of painting such as Francisco de Zurbarán, Juan Pantoja de la Cruz, Antonio Joli de Dipi, Federico de Madrazo, Erasmus Quellinus, Agustín Esteve or Ramón Casas y Carbó who bring us closer to a particular concept of beauty that will allow us to better understand his creative drive, his career in Fashion, and with all this, himself. His most iconic dresses and creations are presented in an organic way, without following a chronological criterion, seeking a constant dialogue between them, regardless of the category to which they correspond (bridal fashion, performing arts, red carpet, etc.) or the year of its creation, to unite in the exhibition space from its inspiring source. Italy, present in its roots, in its soul and in its heart, a constant, fundamental and necessary inspiration to understand its vital and creative universe. From 16th of october 2024 until 30th of March 2025. More info: https://lnkd.in/euPxDpRd #icomcostume #fashion #textile

Ferrater. Foto-Moda-Fuerza, Museo del Traje, Madrid/Spain ------------------ Great retrospective of the work of José Manuel Ferrater Lambarri (Barcelona, 1948), one of the main names in fashion photography in Spain, with national and international recognition. Strength, Ferrater's leitmotif, will be the guiding thread for this review of the work of an author who, with his particular style, was one of the pioneers in promoting and revolutionizing fashion photography in Spain. He stood out in the seventies with transgressive, dark, ironic and sensual photography. As a photographer he has remained faithful to his own concept of photography, which can travel from the sordid, challenging or underground to the most surprisingly optimistic, fun and hooligan. He has won different awards throughout his career and his photographs are an unavoidable reference in fashion photography exhibitions in Spain. Photography linked to fashion media has recently established itself within the collections of the Museo del Traje Traje, as a fundamental means of documenting the history of contemporary fashion. In this collection, precisely the set of works by José Manuel Ferrater plays a leading role, due to the importance of his legacy, as well as the chronological breadth of his photographic and audiovisual archive, with a great diversity of projects, brands or characters represented. The exhibition investigates their influences, motivations, style and personal characteristics, but at the same time addresses other topics, such as the dissemination systems of fashion and advertising, the evolution of photographic technique in the last five decades, the creative process or the concept of beauty. Well-known Spanish brands are represented in his photography, as well as a wide range of national and international supermodels, women and men. Furthermore, compared to the clothing exhibitions that usually exist in the Museum, in which fashion designs are shown on their mannequins in an inevitably static way, photography allows these designs to be “given life” and shown within their original context. Glitter. Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg/Germany ----------------------- Glitter sparkles and shimmers, fascinates and outrages. It can be found on stages as well as on protest posters and in children’s rooms. Glitter is omnipresent – and yet the MK&G is the first museum in the world to dedicate an exhibition to this material. The show will focus on glitter in current political contexts and collective movements, both as a material and a metaphor for visibility, belonging and self-determination. Around 40 international examples from the worlds of art and design will be brought together – works that make use of glitter as a means of protest or as an element of performance or pop culture, as a symbol for drawing attention to marginalised groups or of resistance against body norms. Visitors will be invited to actively participate – whether by adding important glitter events to a sparkling timeline that traces the invention, use and prohibition of the material, or by crafting their own glittery creations in the D.I.Y. space. Also, an open “Call for Glitter” was launched, collecting favourite glitter objects. Together, they will become a glittering cosmos and the central piece of the exhibition. Among those represented in the exhibition are: :mentalKLINIK (Belgium / Turkey), 3rzhuobabypink (China), Damali Abrams (USA), Hannah Altman (USA), Pansy St. Battie (USA), Sophia Bizer (Germany), Chila Kumari Singh Burman (United Kingdom), Marina Carniglia (Argentina), Analía Cid (Argentina), T.L. MGC Asian Traditional Textiles Museum, Siem Reap/Cambodia ------------------------ The MGC Asian Traditional Museum showcases the best in Asian textiles from around the Mekong region, including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and India. There are a variety of galleries showing the weaving process in each country and a mix of traditional and contemporary galleries showing different regional costumes past and present. The museum aims to familiarise the public with a range of textile traditions from India and the Mekong delta. The Museum also represents the civilisational, cultural and commercial linkages among the member countries down the centuries. The Mekong-Ganga Cooperation (MGC) Asian Traditional Textiles Museum was opened in April 2014. The Museum explores raw materials, methods of processing the raw materials, weaving methods, methods of decorating the textiles, variety of textiles etc. from the Mekong-Ganga region. Permanent collections: The MGC Asian Traditional Textiles Museum features extensive collections related to the textile traditions of countries in the Mekong-Ganga region. Each country has its own varieties of silk cocoon. Cambodia and Vietnam have gold cocoon feeding on the mulberry. India has Tussar, Endi/Eri, Muga varieties. Siem Reap is the gateway town to Angkor Park, where each of the monuments show many narratives from Hindu and Buddhist mythology. The carvings on the walls and the sculptures in the monuments speak volumes about the Angkor traditional textiles. But the drapes, styles etc. of the textiles on these carving and sculptures do not relate to the texture, colors, materials, vibrancy etc. of the textiles. The Authority for the protection of the site and the Management of the Region of Angkor (Apsara National Authority - អាជ្ញាធរជាតិអប្សរា National Authority or ANA) was created in 1995 to answer, in particular, one of the conditions of inscription of the Angkor Site on the World Heritage List, completed in December 1992 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. Thus, during the 19th Session of the World Heritage Committee in Berlin, in December 1995, the announcement by the Cambodian Authorities of the creation of the National Authority APSARA was welcomed with satisfaction by the international community.
