Our project is working to reduce the ♻️environmental impact ♻️ of the pharmaceutical industry. We're getting rid of solvents, by using #mechanochemistry. Our multidisciplinary team is funded by the European Commission that gathers experts from 17 institutions in academia, SMEs and industry, including leading pharma companies like Novartis and Merck. Our goal is to demonstrate the potential of mechanochemistry for more sustainable drug manufacturing. Overall, we could decrease carbon emissions by almost 90%, reducing chemical waste and pollution as well. #HorizonEU #pharma

    It’s essential to have a dictionary to understand what we’re talking about when we explore the world of #mechanochemistry. Let’s introduce some key terms: #MechanoMondays. 💊 Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API): This is the ingredient in a pill that produces its therapeutic effects—the functional compound. In the well-known antidepressant Prozac, the API is fluoxetine, which inhibits serotonin uptake. Some medicines can contain multiple APIs. ⚫ Ball mill: A type of grinder consisting of a large jar containing balls. When materials are placed inside, the jar is spun, & collisions between the balls & reactants drive chemical reactions. Ball mills can vary in geometry, as well as in the materials and sizes of the balls. ⚗️ Batch process: Chemistry can work in batches, much like cooking pots of pasta. In this process, reactants are loaded into a reactor or vessel, where the reaction is initiated, allowed to proceed, and completed before the mixture is removed. 🧪 Chemical reaction: A process in which one or more substances, known as reactants, are transformed into one or more different substances, called products. During a chemical reaction, the atoms of the reactants are rearranged, resulting in products that are distinct from them. 🌊 Continuous process: As mentioned earlier, chemistry can operate through either discontinuous or continuous processes. The latter involves a setup where chemical reactions take place in a continuously flowing stream, much like flowing water. 🍃 Green chemistry: It involves the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances. It applies throughout the life cycle of a chemical product, including its design, manufacture, use, & ultimate disposal. 🚫 Impossible reaction: Traditional chemical methods often face limitationsdue to high energy barriers and unfavourable reaction conditions. Consequently, the are some reactions considered as “impossible”. Mechanochemistry offers a unique approach to circumvent these hurdles. ♻️ Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): LCA is a comprehensive analytical method used to evaluate the environmental impacts of a product, process, or service. It goes beyond just manufacture and use, considering the entire life span of the product. 🔨 Mechanochemistry: A method of chemical synthesis induced by external mechanical energy, using techniques such as ball milling, twin-screw extrusion, or spray drying. This approach enables fast, solvent-free reactions, primarily involving solid-state synthesis. 🏭 Scale up: The process of increasing the size or capacity of a chemical production operation from a small, laboratory scale to a larger, industrial scale. It involves adapting conditions, equipment, and processes to maintain efficiency, safety, and product quality.

    Apart from helping with molecule characterisation, our partners at Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung also plays a very important role in the modelling of the reactions.🧐 📊 To have a coherent methodology throughout the project, they have worked on a model system to develop an experimental protocol. This systematic guide forms the bedrock for all partners within IMPACTIVE.     We wanted to use bead-milling technology for the solvent-free synthesis of paracetamol, and we did it! 🥳 This is the first use of such method to perform a reaction in the absence of solvent - it normally operates under wet milling conditions.This sustainable mechanochemical synthesis of the drug outperformed solution-based methods, delivering both better yields and green chemistry metrics. 📑 Read the full paper here: https://buff.ly/3T62TRO #MechanoMondays

    What's going on between molecules when they 💥SMASH💥 with each other? Our colleagues at the Center for Colloid and Surface Science (CSGI) look at reactions really, really closely.🔍 The aim is to understand how atoms and molecules behave in ball mills, extruders and other mechanochemical equipment, to analyse reaction rates and optimise reactions. This involves tasks like doing numerical simulations of reactions or developing unique experimental settings to measure local reaction conditions. In fact, our partner is developing a novel form of spectroscopy.
