Bringing neuroscience to the world
À propos
IBRO is the global association of neuroscience societies that supports neuroscience worldwide through training, education, research, outreach & engagement, and the publication of two journals, Neuroscience and IBRO Neuroscience Reports. More than 90 international, national, and regional member organizations, together with the five IBRO Regional Committees, address the needs and advance the work of individual scientists and research communities everywhere. The joint effort also aims to enhance the quality, diversity, equity, inclusion, and impact of international neuroscience across the globe. In addition, IBRO has partnerships with like-minded scientific societies and organizations to identify priorities and help bridge gaps in knowledge, investment, and resources in the field of brain research.

For nearly a decade, UNESCO-IBE and the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) have partnered to support UNESCO Member States in developing 21st-century education systems grounded in evidence of how we learn. This initiative is driven by the belief that understanding human learning is essential to transforming education. Eight years on, the IBRO/IBE initiative continues to attract science of learning experts, who collaborate with the IBE to make cutting-edge research accessible to policymakers and practitioners. We have built a global community of practice, bringing together leading scholars and institutions, whose work has the potential to strengthen the scientific foundation of education and learning. I’m honored to share the first blog published on the IBE Science of Learning Portal, written by the brilliant David Daniel, as it addresses the very core of our work: "Using neuroscience to inspire educational policy? A suggestion to responsibly translate neuroscience toward effective policy and practice". https://lnkd.in/ekdfDw-Y Stefania Giannini, Daniel Ansari, Tracy Bale, Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, EdD, Jo Van Herwegen, Sebastian J. In an early post, I promised to say a bit more about the just ended 2nd Neuropharmacology Research and Drug Development (#NRDD2024) School sponsored by International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) ARC, and hosted by University of Zimbabwe who also had faculty in the School including Louis Gada and myself. I have been debating on how to contract five days of learning into a few sentences which adequately convey what the students learnt and were exposed to. After pondering on the above for a while I have subdivided the topics taught at #NRDD2024 into six main themes (you can call it #NRDD2024 according to Dexter 😁). So below are the areas which were covered; 1️⃣ Basics of pharmacology: students had instruction (including assignments, virtual and collaborative practicum) on pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, including important pharmacological topics like drug targets, binding, affinity, potency and efficacy. 2️⃣ Fundamentals of Neuropharmacology: instruction was given on functional neuroanatomy of the brain 🧠 (cell types, neurotransmitters and functions), introduction to neuropharmacology (drug groups and their uses), drugs and the blood brain barrier. 3️⃣ Research techniques and methods in neuropharmacology research: students were taught on animal models used in neuropharmacology research including for mental disorders, neurological disorders and pain (including ethics in animal research). In vitro models used in neuropharmacology were also discussed, as well as in silico techniques. 4️⃣ Safety and toxicology: The role of drug regulatory authorities in drug development was also discussed including the importance of safety to the regulator. In addition, essentials of preclinical toxicology were explained including drug interactions and their impact in safety. The students were also taught on important issues to do with adverse drug reactions. 5️⃣ Phytochemistry essentials for neuropharmacology research: topics under this included identifying “lead” neurologically active compounds from literature and community, good practices for extracting and preparing crude extracts and bioactive compounds. 6️⃣ Tooics of practical importance: Discussions were done on practical issues like how to get research funding, survival skills for research in Africa, how to write a paper, make a poster, do a presentation and prepare a lecture. I think the above almost captures the essence of #NRDD2024. If I have left anything out I hope that my co-faculty Willias Masocha Martha I. Dávila-García PhD, FASPET Robert Peter Biney, PhD Rachael Dangarembizi Dr. Oritoke Okeowo Samuel Kombian Louis Gada will add in subsequent posts or in the comments section. #SONA #IBRO #Neuropharmacology #IBROARC
