Does Gut Microbiota Play a Role in Alzheimer’s Disease? A recent study found that patients with Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment have an altered gut microbiota, with reduced butyrate-producing bacteria, which correlates with increased free water in grey matter. These findings suggest a potential gut-brain link in Alzheimer's disease , where targeting the microbiome could help alleviate neuroinflammation and cognitive decline. 🔗 Read more : https://lnkd.in/ekU_qk67 To learn more about this topic, join us at the First Conjoint Meeting between ISM and RIKEN on 8-9 October in Tokyo, Japan. 🌐 Find out more about the conference on our website : https://lnkd.in/dPDpKRJq #TargetingMicrobiota #InternationalSocietyofMicrobiota #ISM #GutMicrobiota #Alzheimer #Brain #MildCognitive

Can Butyrate Unlock New Therapies for Gastrointestinal Diseases? Butyrate, a microbial metabolite derived from dietary fiber fermentation, plays a vital role in colonocyte function, gut barrier integrity, and immune regulation. Alain Stintzi from the University of Ottawa (Canada) and his team, highlight its protective effects in IBD, graft-versus-host disease, and colon cancer. Despite its potential, clinical efforts to enhance butyrate levels have shown variable outcomes, underscoring the complexity of microbiota-host interactions. Advancing microbiome-based therapies requires a deeper understanding of butyrate’s molecular mechanisms. 🔗 : https://lnkd.in/dYYcjVgM How can we optimize butyrate-targeted interventions? Can your diet shape your gut microbiota and influence health? A new study led by Jun Kunisawa from the National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation (NIBIOHN), Japan, reveals that high barley consumption —especially when paired with natto — correlates with an increased abundance of butyrate-producing gut bacteria, Butyricicoccus and Subdoligranulum. These findings highlight the potential gut health benefits of dietary fiber and fermented foods. 🔗 : https://lnkd.in/dSH9N3yq Jun Kunisawa will dive deeper into this topic during the First Conjoint Meeting between ISM and RIKEN, happening October 8-9 in Tokyo, Japan. 🔬 Can probiotics help fight neuroinflammation? New research highlights the potential of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei extracellular vesicles (EVs) in reducing neuroinflammation and restoring cognitive function in hyperammonemic rats, a model of minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE). Findings show that these EVs counteract glial activation, normalize key neuroinflammatory pathways, and improve learning and memory. Chronic Gut Infections Linked to Alzheimer’s Disease! A recent study from Arizona State University and the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute suggests that chronic gut infection by cytomegalovirus (HCMV) may contribute to Alzheimer’s disease in a subset of patients. The researchers found that HCMV could travel from the gut to the brain via the vagus nerve, leading to hallmark Alzheimer’s changes like amyloid plaques and tau tangles. Their findings highlight the role of microglia—the brain’s immune cells—in driving chronic inflammation and neuronal damage in response to the virus. This form of Alzheimer’s may affect up to 45% of patients and presents distinct biological markers. The team is now developing a blood test to detect active HCMV infections and exploring antiviral therapies as a potential solution. Could this be the key to preventing neurodegeneration in certain Alzheimer’s cases ❓ Read more: https://lnkd.in/dKg868g2 #InternationalSocietyofMicrobiota #ISM #TargetingMicrobiota #AlzheimersDisease #GutBrainConnection #Neurology #Microglia #InfectionResearch
