Alert is a biannual magazine published by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF USA) that features ground reporting from our work around the world. This article appears in the Winter 2024 issue (Vol. 25, no. 2), The Year in Photos. In 2024, malnutrition levels reached a crisis point in several of the countries where Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières(MSF) works. These emergencies were triggered by multiple factors, including lack of access to nutritious food and the spread of disease amid war, displacement, and climate change. Malnutrition has disastrous effects on health. It weakens the immune system, making people more likely to develop severe or even fatal cases of diseases they might otherwise survive. Many diseases also increase the risk of malnutrition. Children are especially vulnerable. MSF treats children with malnutrition in our inpatient and outpatient therapeutic feeding centers around the world, including with ready-to-use therapeutic foods like Plumpy’Nut, a fortified and sweetened peanut paste. Here are three places where MSF is working right now to tackle malnutrition and its serious consequences. 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 • Provided 615 households with food baskets made up of fresh, locally grown produce (apples, bananas, maize, sweet potatoes and yams) as well as non-perishable produce (beans, maize flour, wheat flour, milk powder, oil, pasta, rice, salt and sugar); composition and quantities depended on the household size. • Engaged 38 small-scale producers to supply the fresh produce included in the food basket and 13 agricultural warehouse operators who carried out post-harvest activities and food delivery. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 • Enabled households to cover their food needs for two months, enabling them to consume three meals a day. • Strengthened local food supply chains thanks to the inclusion of fresh, locally grown produce in the food baskets, enhancing both their availability and nutritional value. • Improved livelihoods, with 38 small-scale producers earning an average of USD 260 each and 13 warehouse operators generating an additional USD 50 each.
