🚨NEW REPORT🚨 EU Buildings Climate Tracker: the sector is far off its targets. It’s not just a climate issue— it’s a PEOPLE issue: energy bills, health, jobs and innovation, and Europe’s energy security concern every European. 💡 But this isn’t a story about failure. It’s a wake-up call and an opportunity. By prioritising building decarbonisation, the EU can achieve: ✅ Lower energy bills and healthier homes for millions ✅ A competitive edge in clean technologies and construction innovation ✅ Enhanced energy independence and resilience ✅ Meaningful progress on equity and social cohesion 📢 As the new College of Commissioners takes shape, bold action is essential. National policymakers must fully implement the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and support large-scale renovation and renewable energy initiatives. Renovation + renewables go hand in hand. The EU’s Affordable Housing Act and Clean Industrial Deal must move building decarbonisation from the sidelines to the center of Europe’s prosperity strategy. Transforming our outdated building stock could be Europe’s *strategic lever* to achieve climate, social, and economic goals faster and better. Ultimately, the EU Buildings Climate Tracker shows that CO2 emissions reduction, final energy consumption, renewable adoption, and energy efficiency investments are more than 40% away from where they should be on the path to achieving 2030 and 2050 climate goals. 👉 As #COP29 in Baku is drawing to an end, negotiators are still working tirelessly to find a compromise over a new collective quantified goal on finance, aimed at providing developing countries with more financial support to pay for mitigation and adaptation to climate change. 🌏 Meanwhile, in the many side events and special fora hosted by the COP Presidency, other remarkable developments have taken place. On Urbanization Day, during a High-Level Roundtable on Green Construction, governments who earlier this year had signed the Declaration de Chaillot reconvened to restate and strengthen their commitment to develop policies, frameworks and roadmaps to decarbonize their building sector and make it more resilient. 👍 This is an incredibly welcome and important step as today only 19 countries have a strong focus on the building sector as part of their national plans, or Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). We have an opportunity to contribute to these plans as they further develop to ensure that we create a healthy, safe, inclusive and resilient built environment for the future. 🎤 I am sharing here some impressions from COP29 through the lens of the many engaged discussions that happened around the #BuildingsCoolingPavilion and other events with wonderful and committed colleagues from governments, businesses, cities and organizations. It was impressive to see the collective work, the deep discussions and the willingness to collaborate with each other! 📣Today I had a great honor to speak on behalf of the American Institute of architects at #cop29Azerbaijan Advancing the framework for design excellence while seeking partnership, giving greater voice to architects worldwide in the midst of mass #climateadaptation and #mitigation. We as #architects play a critical role in translating the goals of #communities into actionable projects that unlock funding all across the world 🌏 ❗️The American Institute of Architects (AIA) , RIBA, critical industry partners, such as the International Code Council and Delta Electronics came together demonstrating that collaboration, codesign and engaging civil society serve as a path wave forward as we collectively navigate the storm. Learning from #indigenouswisdom and marrying modern technology are part of learning from the global south in the session. 🇦🇿COP29 Azerbaijan : Advocating for #Sufficiency in Design🌍 Représentating UIA Union Internationale des Architectes I participated in the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) event, “The Sufficiency Revolution: Ensuring a Just Transition through Indigenous Wisdom, Resilience, and Sufficiency” For the launch of the sufficiency report. This pivotal discussion focused on: • Using locally sourced resources and indigenous wisdom for resilient and inclusive designs. • Promoting passive cooling and utilizing local materials in climate-vulnerable regions. • Bridging diverse contexts, standards, and frameworks to empower communities while addressing climate and cultural needs responsibly. 🏆Thank you to Mina Hasman for her excellent moderation! #AEEEatCOP29 We are excited to share that Jayanta Chaudhuri, Director, Marketing, Alliances and Partnerships, AEEE, shared his insights at a UNFCCC COP29 side event on 'Financing the Adoption of Passive Cooling Strategies for a Cooler, Sustainable Future.' This session highlighted strategies to finance and scale passive cooling solutions, offering insights into reducing both energy consumption and costs. Jayanta emphasised the pivotal role of adopting a Lean-Mean-Green approach to reducing cooling demand. He stressed the need to prioritise passive cooling strategies by focusing on building envelopes, which can significantly cut energy requirements while ensuring thermal comfort for all. He spotlighted AEEE's initiatives, such as Solar Decathlon India, in building capacity among youth to design NZEBs with passive cooling at the forefront.
