JRS Europe: European Governments Must Continue to Protect Syrians JRS Europe is deeply concerned by recent statements from European governments suggesting possible revisions to protection policies for Syrian refugees and asylum seekers following the fall of al-Assad's regime. Given the context of widespread uncertainty in Syria, it is essential that Europe continues to provide refuge and safety. As Alberto Ares, Director of JRS Europe, states: "Forcing Syrians to leave their homes again—this time from the countries where they’ve rebuilt their lives—would be irresponsible and cruel." We call on European governments to: - Maintain protection for Syrian refugees already in Europe. - Refrain from detaining or blocking new Syrian asylum seekers at the borders. - Ensure that the asylum process remains accessible to all. Syria is still not a safe place to live or raise children, nor can it reintegrate the thousands of citizens living abroad. Until peace and stability are restored, Europe must stand in solidarity with Syrians, offering the protection they need. JRS Europe urges a cautious and compassionate response from European states in supporting displaced people.
