She’s Let Herself Go! How often have we heard the phrase, “She’s let herself go”? It’s a cruel statement, aimed at women, often when they’re most vulnerable. Historically used by men, it’s especially disappointing to hear women echo it, perpetuating judgment. It’s time to challenge this harmful narrative. This phrase assumes a woman’s worth is tied to her appearance, reinforcing outdated beauty standards. Men rarely face the same level of scrutiny. Women are judged for “letting themselves go,” as if looking perfect should be their priority. Weight gain, tired eyes, or a lack of grooming often reflect life’s pressures. From motherhood, grief, or mental health struggles to menopause, women experience significant physical and emotional changes that can impact their appearance. • Motherhood: Pregnancy and sleepless nights take a toll. • Grief or Divorce: Emotional strain often shifts priorities. • Menopause: Weight gain, exhaustion, and visible ageing make women an easy target for criticism. These challenges aren’t signs of “giving up”—they’re signs of surviving life’s transitions. Menopause adds another layer of vulnerability. Hormonal shifts and societal pressures to look youthful collide, leaving women judged for changes they cannot control. Instead of support, they are met with silence, shame, and criticism. Why This Must Stop 🛑 Judging women by appearance devalues their worth and perpetuates harmful stereotypes. • It’s demeaning to reduce women to their looks. • It’s unkind when women already face challenges. • It’s unrealistic to expect perfection in life’s hardest moments. Instead of criticising, we must foster empathy, celebrate women’s achievements, and reject unattainable beauty standards. When a woman chooses to prioritise herself, her family, or her passions over appearance, she’s not “letting herself go.” She’s reclaiming her life. Let’s retire this phrase for good and support women with kindness, not judgement. ♥️ #meg #menopause #feminism #supportwomen
