🟢 New science in Nature Magazine reveals the true scope of the 2022 #NordStream pipeline leak, the largest single release of #methane ever recorded. UN Environment Programme’s IMEO led a global team of nearly 70 scientists from over 30 research teams to uncover new insights on the world’s single largest #MethaneLeak. 🚨 They found that emissions were in fact nearly double some initial estimates. UNEP's IMEO collects and integrates methane emissions data to target ambitious emissions reductions and track progress.
À propos
Reducing methane emissions is the single fastest way to slow global warming as we decarbonize, but the world needs empirical data to enable climate action at scale. UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is harnessing a methane data revolution by putting open, reliable, and actionable data directly into the hands of individuals with the power to reduce emissions. Methane data is critical for closing the emissions gap by focusing mitigation efforts and tracking progress over time. Situated at the centre of the world’s methane data ecosystem, IMEO collects, synthesizes, and publishes data from its Methane Science Studies; from satellites via the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS); through rigorous industry reporting via the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0); and from national emissions inventories. IMEO is a core implementing partner of the Global Methane Pledge – which is a global effort by over 150 countries, led by the EU and US, to reduce global methane emissions 30 per cent by 2030 from 2020 levels.

Rapid action to #CutMethane emissions is one of the most important short-term climate actions we can take to immediately slow warming. 🟢 Proven technologies and practices could reduce #emissions from the major sectors like fossil fuel, waste and agriculture by as much as 45% by 2030. 🛰️ Most of these technical solutions can be implemented at little or no cost, especially in the fossil fuel sector. ➡️ UN Environment Programme's International Methane Emissions Observatory plays a key role in helping bridge critical gaps in data to foster transparency and enable action through science-based solutions. 🟢 Happening soon ➡️ Capacity building workshop in Libya’s #OilAndGas sector funded by the European Commission and implemented by UNDP and UN Environment Programme ’s IMEO. The training aims to: 🔺 Equip employees of Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) with key knowledge and skills needed to identify and implement methane reporting and #mitigation measures. 🔺 Provide the foundation for a robust data collection system in accordance with Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) requirements. ℹ️ OGMP 2.0 is the only comprehensive, measurement-based international reporting framework for the sector. 🔺 Demonstrate the value of responding to Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) notifications. ℹ️ MARS is the first global satellite detection and notification system providing actionable data on very large #MethaneEmissions around the world. 👏 This week we commemorate International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Women across the globe are contributing critical science enabling the world to #CutMethane emissions and #ActOnClimate. 👩🔬 UN Environment Programme’s IMEO celebrates their contributions – and the ongoing work of women scientists, engineers and data analysts across our own team helping to provide open, reliable and actionable insights to drive methane action. ℹ️ There has never been a greater need for scientists capable of finding solutions to the triple planetary crisis. 🌐That’s why the world needs to encourage more women to join and stay in the sciences—because #EveryVoiceInScience matters. #WomenInScience #GirlsInSTEM

💡 New research spotlights a critical opportunity for #methane action: study finds small sources add up to a majority of emissions from U.S. oil and gas production across different basins. 🚨 Mitigation of large methane leaks has received much attention ➡ But this study shows that small, dispersed sources must also be addressed to effectively manage emissions. 🔺 Comprehensive tracking of methane through measurement-based frameworks, such as UN Environment Programme’s Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0, is key to addressing these small but collectively substantial emissions. 🔺 Alongside tools like OGMP 2.0, innovation and new monitoring missions like MethaneSAT and Carbon Mapper offer complimentary solutions to multi-scale approaches to track both smaller, diffuse emissions as well as large emitters. 🔺These monitoring elements are advancing efforts to quantify total #MethaneEmissions from various #OilAndGas supply chains, which will provide a basis for buyers to discriminate purchasing or for regulators to levy fees and apply policy. 💥 Exciting Day 1 of OGMP 2.0’s Annual Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where companies from across the globe have gathered to advance efforts to #CutMethane. Members of OGMP 2.0 – the UN Environment Programme flagship methane measurement and reporting framework – are convening to collectively enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of their emissions management through this community of practice. Day 1 included: 🌐 An overview of the global methane landscape from regulation and policy shifts to financial sector demands. 🔬 Unpacking what the science tells us and the value of integrating data for OGMP 2.0 members. 📡 Review of validation of various monitoring techniques used to measure, report and verify emissions. As IMEO’s Roland Kupers noted: “Reducing methane emissions is critical to the license to operate of all companies. This is a collective action problem for industry.” Fortunately, it is a problem – and opportunity – that the industry has the tools to act on. As better data enable action at speed and scale, the European Commission's Joana Simão Costa’s stressed that “OGMP 2.0 is the global benchmark for methane measurement, reporting, and verification.” OGMP 2.0 is a powerful community of practice, enabling companies to exchange knowledge and collectively advance their efforts to reduce emissions. We’re looking forward to more days of productive engagement. 👉 Learn more about OGMP 2.0: https://lnkd.in/e2rfrBmU
